Law graduate appointment to the District Court
Anthony Allen QC (LLB ’99) is the first Flinders University law graduate to be appointed to South Australia's District Court. With a career spanning more than 20 years, Anthony has an extensive background in practising criminal law, including time as a prosecutor in the Office of the South Australian Director of Public Prosecutions, as a Partner with Mangan Ey & Associates and as a Barrister with the Legal Services Commission, prior to a distinguished career at the Independent Bar. Graduation first
In December former Up The Hill participant Rachel High (BA ’21) graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. She became the first person living with Down syndrome to graduate from an Australian university. Rachel hopes her achievement will be taken as proof that other people living with intellectual disability can pursue academic success. Read more
Bee species named after a Flinders graduate
Flinders University science graduate and Australian bee photographer, Dr James B Dorey (BSc(Hons) '18) has had a new bee species named after him. The naming of the Chrysocolletes doreyi acknowledges Dr Dorey’s long-running contribution to Australian bee taxonomy. Seven new bee species were recently discovered in Queensland’s tropical north. City of Marion Citizen of the Year
One of Flinders University’s very first Distinguished Alumni Awardees and former staff member, Adjunct Associate Professor Pauline Glover, was recently named Marion Citizen of the Year, recognised for her work supporting vulnerable people in the Marion community. Pauline has a Doctor of Education (2001), Master of Nursing Studies (1994) and Diploma of Teaching (Nurse Education) (1980) from Flinders and taught at the University for many years. She is a Life Member of the Australian College of Midwives, honouring her 40 years of service to midwifery. Read more

2023 Churchill Fellowships: travel overseas to develop your knowledge
Churchill Fellowships offer a diverse range of people from all walks of life an opportunity to travel overseas for four to eight weeks to explore a topic or issue that they are passionate about. No prescribed qualifications are required in order to apply for a Churchill Fellowship, and the topics of proposed projects are limitless, provided a benefit to Australia and willingness to share findings with the Australian community is evident. Triple 0 Charity Ball boosts support for paramedic students
In November last year the inaugural Triple 0 Charity Ball raised over $78,000 to support SA Police and their families during times of crisis, burns and road trauma survivors, and paramedic students at Flinders University facing financial hardship, through the Stafford Wulff Opportunity Scholarship in Paramedic Science.

Donation supports cannabis research for treating cancer
John Rava saw medical cannabis provide invaluable relief for his wife Maxine as she endured breast cancer over many years. He now believes it is capable of so much more in treating the disease and the fight to cure cancer. Through a personal donation and in loving memory of his wife, John has established The Maxine Rava Cannabis for Cancer Research and Health Care Fund at Flinders University, which aims to advance the use and acceptance of medicinal cannabis for cancer treatment and to research the potential for it to cure cancer.

Space archaeology first
A world-first – or solar system-first – archaeological project has begun on the International Space Station. Led by archaeologists Associate Professor Alice Gorman from Flinders University and Associate Professor Justin Walsh of Chapman University in California, the International Space Station Archaeological Project (ISSAP) is the first archaeological study of a space habitat.

New Health and Medical Research Building
Flinders University President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Stirling has announced that construction is about to commence for a new landmark $255 million Health and Medical Research Building. The building will be located adjacent to the Flinders railway station and right next to Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders Private Hospital. Read more
Flinders at the forefront of aged care reform
Aged care experts from Flinders University will lead a $34m initiative which will transform the way Australia supports its ageing population. Minister for Senior Australians and Aged Care Services, Senator Richard Colbeck recently helped to launch the Aged Care Centre for Growth and Translational Research, which will ensure research and innovation translate to best practice.
