Happy Holiday Season!

Wishing you and yours all the best of everything this holiday season and in the New Year.

"The pages are still blank,

but there is a miraculous feeling of the words being there,
written in invisible ink and clamoring to become visible."

~ Vladimir Nabokov

A Fond Farewell to Beloved Now Write! Contributors

Michael Ajakwe Jr.

Michael Ajakwe Jr.

Michael Ajakwe was an Emmy-winning writer, producer, and director, produced playwright, early contributor to Now Write! Screenwriting, and the creator of the first-ever webseries festival, LA Webfest.

Michael was a true friend and I personally received a painful reminder from his untimely departure May 31, 2018.

Listen to an inspiring interview with Michael.

Dallas Mayr aka Jack Ketchum

Dallas Mayr aka Jack Ketchum

I was deeply saddened to learn that "The Scariest Guy In America" passed away January 28, 2018. He left quite a legacy of real-life horror inspired by his deep humanity.

Learn more about Jack's work and see an interview we did at Center of Fiction in NYC.

Harlan Ellison

Harlan Ellison

Harlan Ellison was a beyond-prolific writer, legend, and the most notorious contributor to the Now Write! series. When I consulted film industry friends on approaching him about Now Write! Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror, the response was always, “Don’t bother.”

Despite the warnings, I was undaunted in my quest to include him in the book.

Read about my visit with Mr. Ellison and see pictures of his unusual home - fit for a one-of-a-kind eccentric genius.

Recent Wins for Now Write! Editor Laurie Lamson

Below I share recent wins – not only to brag and celebrate my own accomplishments – but also to remind and inspire you:

Recognition and accolades are not guaranteed, and can come a long time after your work on a project is completed. So I encourage every writer to stay in the moment, follow where inspiration and opportunity lead you, and enjoy the challenging and rewarding creative process of writing for its own sake.

Also, it is never too late to try something new, as a writer and as a person.

Now Write! Editor Laurie Lamson Wins Award for Screenwriting

Eight years ago I accepted a challenging assignment: to adapt the life and work of musician/activist Buzzy Martin for the screen, including his nonfiction book Don't Shoot, I'm The Guitar Man, in which he details teaching music to San Quentin prisoners.

GUITAR MAN was finally made with love in the Bay Area on an indie budget.

I've written over 80 produced scripts, from 30 sec. PSAs to a 90-minute health DVD, and a number of unproduced scripts - this is my first feature screenplay to be produced.

GUITAR MAN already won the Audience Award for "Best Drama" at its debut screenings at San Francisco Indie Fest, "Best Drama" at IFS Film Festival in Los Angeles, and five additional awards.

A couple of weeks ago, I took a teenaged friend to see the screening at Cinema At The Edge in Santa Monica.

Imagine my surprise when we decided to stay for the award ceremony following the screening - and I received their "Best Writer" award for the GUITAR MAN script!

Another First For Laurie

Never attempted to write a song before, but a couple of years ago I had the chance to co-write lyrics with Jamaican singer/ songwriter Demo Delgado.

He recorded the song "Give Thanks For Life"  earlier this year. It has a mellow vibe designed to increase an "attitude of gratitude," so I wanted to share it for Thanksgiving.

Hear the song and read lyrics here

A music video is in production. Here is a one-minute Christmas video from 2016 with the chorus that he had created that morning.
