Images of Research Competition 2024 – Closing Monday 23 September 2024.

Just a reminder that our Images of Research competition is open now and closes 23 September! This year’s competition will coincide with Postdoc Appreciation Week (16 - 20 September), celebrating the great work of our ECRs. The competition has received hundreds of entries over the years, showcasing the breadth of research undertaken at the university through a single, visually-engaging image and short, jargon-free description.

Prizes for the top three entries, plus an Arts and Cultures Team commendation, will be awarded in October with all entries being displayed in several locations, including the Forum, Streatham Campus from mid-November.

Read our blog to hear from last year’s winner and others involved in the competition or watch our video to find out more.

Further information including how to enter and submission guidance can be found on our website. The Images of Research competition is one of the ways we seek to support our early career researchers. You can find out more about how we support a positive research culture on our Research Culture SharePoint site.

Skills Development for Early Career Researchers

Deadline for Survey - Sunday 15 September 2024

Creative skillsets underpin all research disciplines and can be improved through self-efficacy. Skills such as ideas generation, problem solving, collaboration and communication are highly valued in research culture, and creative thinking is the second most important skill for employers globally (World Economic Forum, 2023).

Sarah Campbell, Associate Director for Arts and Culture, is seeking feedback from all ECRs (self-defining), across all faculties, for their views on creative skills development – what role does it play in your current post, and how might it support future career progression?
I hope the survey will only take 10-15 minutes. Your feedback is much appreciated and will help shape upcoming creative skills development programmes.

This research is being conducted as part of a PGDip/MBA at the Business School.

Workshop: An Introduction to Developing and Evidencing Wellbeing Impact

    Wednesday 18 September 2024 (10.30 am – 12.30 pm)
St Luke’s Campus, EMS Building S09 and Online.

This event is now sold out on Eventbrite. To attend online, please email Professor Simon Hayhoe (s.hayhoe@exeter.ac.uk).

The impact our research has on the communities we work in is an increasing part of academic research, and evidence of impact is increasingly required by research funders, institutions, governments, and participants in research. If you work in an academic field related to developing well-being, join us for a practical workshop on planning your research or public engagement project to generate impact, gathering evidence to evaluate your impact, and communicating your impact as a case study. This event aims to bring together individuals interested in developing impact in the field of well-being and involves the analysis and discussion of impact case studies that were developed for REF 2021.

NPAW - Exeter Event - The Strategic Researcher

    Wednesday 18 September 2024 (1 pm – 3 pm) - Online.

Join leading practitioner, researcher and cognitive behavioural coach Hugh Kearns as he shares his insights on what it means to be a strategic researcher.  Are you wanting to get a grant, but not sure how to approach it strategically? Or despite getting the grant and getting the research done, do you find it hard to achieve the publication outputs? And if you do publish, how strategic are you about it - do you just do the next paper on the list or do you think about which one will help with your next grant or be read by more people or have greatest impact?

The Online Panel Meeting - Towards more harmonious and resilient human settlements

    27 September 2024 (3 pm) - save the date!

In this panel, we discuss how to replan or relocate climate affected settlements, making them more harmonious with nature and resilient to climatic effects, and how data science and artificial intelligence can assist us in this.  More information will be communicated through the IDSAI mailing list over the coming weeks. Colleagues can subscribe to the mailing list by contacting idsai@exeter.ac.uk.

Training in Creative Skills for Early Career Researchers

The same session will run twice –
    Tuesday 1 October 2024 (9.30 am - 1 pm) – Streatham, Old Library Training Room 4.
    Wednesday 2 October 2024 (9.30 am - 1 pm) – Penryn, Room tbc.

This workshop is not about the arts. Instead, it focuses on ways of heightening your self-efficacy and awareness of processes that underpin ideas generation and problem solving. Like anything else, creativity develops through practice and application, and we will be introducing potentially transformative ways of expanding your understanding of this essential skill.

The workshop is led by Sarah Campbell, Associate Director for Arts and Culture, and Clare Hearn, Senior Lecturer in Strategy and Innovation in the Business School. It has been developed in collaboration with Researcher Development and Research Culture. This is a taster session to pilot a new approach. Sarah will be seeking feedback to inform a PGDip/MBA assessed Strategic Business Proposal. Your feedback will also help Sarah and Clare to develop a series of workshops on this topic.

Emotionally Challenging Research: impacts, coping and proactive interventions

    Wednesday 30 October 2024 (12 noon - 3.30 pm) - Online

This online workshop introduces a practical toolkit, providing resources and guidance to support researchers, supervisors and organisations in managing the emotional aspects of their work and progressing towards a strategic approach to researcher wellbeing and emotionally challenging topics. It is structured into three parts. The first part of the webinar will explore the impacts of emotionally challenging research, presenting our findings on the symptoms experienced by researchers. The second part will focus on coping mechanisms and interventions and will give you an opportunity to start using our resources and write your own Researcher Wellbeing Plan. The third part introduces a set of tiered recommendations for institutional support, categorised into Bronze, Silver, and Gold standards, offering a phased approach to their implementation. We will then discuss where your institution fits in relation to these standards, and we will explore further one of the resources, the guidance on risk assessment and mental health.

    Research Culture

Research Not Been Assessed Fairly? We’d Love to Hear from You

We want everyone’s contribution to research to be fairly recognised; that means using expert (ie, peer) judgement when assessing others’ research, and not inappropriately relying on journal impact factors or other proxies for the value and impact of research.

We have developed a confidential feedback form where you can tell us if you feel your research or your team/discipline’s research has been unfairly assessed. For example, it may be that you feel the wrong measures were used, the impact of your research was not fully appreciated, or the journal/publisher of where your research was published was (mis-) used to judge its quality. This information will be used to understand the scale and diversity of issues relating to research assessment at Exeter. These real-world examples will inform advice notes and University policies that encourage a high-quality research culture and help meet our EDI goals.

Find out more about responsible metrics and their importance in making research assessment fairer for all.
