Welcome to the June edition of the College newsletter for 2025. 

Our lead story and photograph this month feature Laura Lesar’s recent visit to University of Hawaii Manoa, where she was instrumental in activating our partnership, which will create new opportunities for our students in Event Management and Tourism. Our newsletter also includes introductions to new staff members Masaba Adneen and Anna Mihaylov, recent initiatives in Health Care Management, 8 new articles in top journals, and Tanya Corsten’s 20th anniversary year at Flinders.

Best Paper Award

Dr. Ashok Manoharan received the Best Paper Award at the 2025 Asia-Pacific Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (APacCHRIE) Conference held in Thailand. His paper, titled "Woke Washing Won’t Work: The Effects of Inclusive Cues on Online Employee Review Sites on Job Seekers’ Application Intentions," was recognised for its outstanding contribution to hospitality and tourism research.

The APacCHRIE Conference is the leading academic forum for hospitality and tourism education and research in the Asia-Pacific region.

The research was a collaborative effort with Yunxuan Carrie Zhang (City University of Macau), Cass Shum (University of Nevada, Las Vegas), and Ashokkumar Manoharan.

From celebrating our 2025 Washington Internship Program interns to launching a ground-breaking defence research project and preparing to welcome former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull for our sold-out Distinguished Lecture—it's been a big month at the Jeff Bleich Centre. In this update, we share recent highlights, exciting new initiatives, and ways to stay connected with the work we're doing at the intersection of democracy, policy, and technology.

Centre for Social Impact

The team at CSI Flinders began June by co-hosting a two-day Outcomes Measurement Workshop, where people from across the sector came together to dive into all things impact and evaluation. Looking ahead, we’ve got two exciting events on the horizon – FGII’s Market Information Day on 18 June and our For-Purpose Leadership Conference on 19 June. Last month, a major new report on cannabis policy was released, with valuable input from Associate Professor Caitlin Hughes.

Celebrating 20 years at Flinders University! 

This month we celebrate Tanya Corstens on reaching an incredible milestone: 20 years of service at Flinders University. Tanya’s dedication, professionalism and collaborative spirit have made a lasting impact across the College. We thank her for two decades of commitment and contribution, and look forward to many more!

Congratulations Hamid Azizi!

Flinders Criminology PhD student, Hamid Azizi received an award this month for top CBGL PhD publication for his research into terrorism and the drugs-terror nexus in Afghanistan and Colombia.

Flinders Business Research Seminar Series

The Flinders Business Research Seminar Series serves as a platform to disseminate research findings from both internal and external researchers to a wider audience, including stakeholders of the College. 

This month, we were pleased to welcome two distinguished researchers in the fields of Economics and Hospitality Management: Dr. Dessie Ambaw (University of South Australia) and Associate Professor Lenna V. Shulga (University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, USA).

Chinese Dragon Boat Festival Celebration

The Government group hosted a multicultural social event to celebrate the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival. As part of the group’s social calendar, the gathering offered an opportunity to connect and learn about cultural traditions. Special thanks to Hongyi, who generously provided traditional food and shared insights into the history and significance of the festival.

The annual Jeff Bleich Centre Distinguished Lecture examines topics aligned with the mission of the Jeff Bleich Centre for Democracy and Disruptive Technologies, diving into the urgent challenges facing democracy in an age of rapid technological change.

Open Days 2025 

Open Days is upon us! This year, our open days will be the following:

  • July 25 & 26 - Bedford Park
  • July 27 - City Campus
  • Tonsley - TBC

There are two shifts each day at Bedford Park on Friday 25 July and, Saturday 26 August, and then at Flinders' City Campus on Sunday 27 July 2025. 

As you all know, Open Days is the largest and arguably the most important student recruitment event in the annual calendar. Watch this space for more information. 

     

    2025 Shaping Australia Awards

    Universities Australia has re-opened entries for the prestigious Shaping Australia Awards, celebrating the positive impact of universities across the nation, from innovative research to workforce development and community service.

    Flinders is now calling for Expressions of Interest from individuals or teams who wish to be considered for nomination.

    Internal EOI deadline: Friday, 8 August 2025
    Submissions should be sent to Dr Jen Beaudry, Manager, Research Training Development and Communications (RDS).
