Kath Ford becomes Young Lives' Deputy Director We are delighted to announce that Kath Ford has been appointed Young Lives' Deputy Director. Alongside new responsibilities, Kath will continue to lead our policy work, to influence national and international policies addressing child and youth poverty in the study countries. 'I am delighted to take up this exciting role supporting our new Director, Marta Favara, in delivering our innovative portfolio of policy-relevant research. I am particularly excited to work on new initiatives focused on climate change, mental health, and learning and skills, which offer exciting opportunities to forge new partnerships and make a meaningful impact on the lives of young people around the world.' Investigating the impact of conflict on young people As part of Round 7 data collection, Young Lives used a ground-breaking method to interview respondents in conflict hit areas in Ethiopia. 'A sound methodology: Measuring experiences of violent conflict through audio self-interviews'Authors: Sophie von Russdorf, Laura Ahlborn, Alessandra Hidalgo-Arestegui, Gerald McQuade, Marta Favara The authors investigate the impact of different survey methods on the disclosure of sensitive or traumatic experiences. In a pilot study in Ethiopia, respondents answered questions either using audio computer-assisted self-interviewing (ACASI) or a traditional face-to-face interview.Listen to our podcast: 'A Sound Methodology' In our latest podcast, researcher and co-author of the journal article, Sophie von Russdorf discusses Young Lives' pilot use of the ACASI method, exploring to what extent it addressed the challenges faced when collecting data in conflict hit areas. Read our blog to find out more about ACASI60% of the young people who participated in the Young Lives pilot in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, reported that a friend or family member had been seriously injured, had disappeared, or had died as a result of the conflict. Collecting information about these experience is very challenging. To the best of our knowledge, Young Lives is the first study to asses and use ACASI to collect personal experiences in a conflict setting.Behind the scenes with the Oxford research team New publications Gender difference in socio-emotional skills'Gender Differences in Socioemotional Skills among Adolescents and Young Adults in Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam' Authors: Mobarak Hossain, Matthew C.H. Jukes. Using Young Lives data, with a comprehensive set of skill measures, the authors examine when gender differences in socioemotional skills emerge, and explore the socioeconomic and cultural determinants of these skills. Young Lives news from around the worldCongratulations to Niños del Milenio (Young Lives Peru) on reaching the finals of the 2024 Peru Sustainable Development Goals Recognition Awards, in the 'Personas' category. These awards recognize the projects and organizations in Peru that contribute significantly to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.The award ceremony will take place on October 4, 2024, during the Sustainable Peru Summit.
