Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to All !From Diane W. Braza, MD As 2021 winds to a close, I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to each of you for your dedication and service to MCW, our PM&R department, CW, FH, MCP and VAMC. Collectively, we have journeyed through this historic pandemic year, forever changed! A year ago, I couldn’t even imagine we would still be in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. Thankfully, we remain healthy and strong. Together, we have so much to be proud of, despite the numerous challenges working amidst a pandemic and
financial restraints. - Our new PM&R clinic opened in early 2021 on the 5th floor of the FH Neuroscience Institute. The room sizes, equipment, adjacency to Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuropsychology and Neurorehabilitation allow for coordinated and efficient patient care.
- The Comprehensive Pain and SpineCare Center also opened in January 2021 at the Tosa Health Center. This MCP initiative has brought together four clinical departments including PM&R, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery and Anesthesia Pain Medicine. The core tenets of SpineCare remain intact including physiatry outpatient clinical practice, outpatient physical and occupational therapy,
chiropractic providers, interventional fluoroscopically and US guided procedures, EMG, in addition to Spine surgical consultations and care.
- Faculty transitions occurred with the departure of Dr. Sepahpanah in January 2021 and subsequent recruitment of Dr. Chris White to VAMC SCI team, retirement of Dr. Mark Klingbeil in April 2021 and recruitment of Dr. Anjum Sayyad as medical director of brain injury medicine in May 2021, and departure of Dr. Erin Beddows in June 2021 as she pursued her fellowship in Cancer Rehabilitation.
- Dr. Karin Goodfriend assumed the role of PM&R residency program director and Dr. Ketchum is now Associate PD.
- Dr. Olivia Park moved her inpatient practice solely to
FH IPR and has significantly led efforts to optimize inpatient IPR documentation, workflows and transformation of the future IPR unit at Bluemound.
- With our FH Rehabilitation teams and business/ HR leaders, we are actively planning for opening the FH Bluemound IPR unit in July 2022, with growth anticipated to 50 IPR beds.
- We have strongly advanced our strategic business and growth plans with CW for a future pediatric IPR unit.
- Our PM&R VAMC teams have advanced telehealth opportunities to provide care to our Veterans, and have continued to implement required federal mandates aimed to optimize patient access and choice.
- Research
initiatives have fully recovered from the required Covid-19 shut down; research day was a wonderful success! Faculty recruitment in research is underway.
- We welcomed Melissa Carroll, APNP, to the MCW PM&R SCI team.
- Jay Kumar, MHA joined PM&R as Business Manager to add support and strength to our administrative team.
- Our PM&R division leaders, Rachel and I have partnered with new outpatient clinic managers at CW, FH and SpineCare.
- Six PM&R residents and one fellow graduated in June 2021; we welcomed six new residents and four PM&R fellows (Sports Medicine, SCI, Pain Neurorehabilitation/ Spasticity) in July
2021!
- Our inaugural PM&R department Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee has been formed and DEI initiatives are actively underway.
- With a very lean and awesome administrative team, we achieved our FY 21 financial targets and the AA/ research team has continued to support faculty and staff.
- We have aggressive growth plans for faculty recruitment and eventual staff recruitment to optimize departmental administrative functions.
As I think about 2021 overall, many words come to mind: “gratitude, resilience, patience, strength, hope, focus, commitment, growth, opportunity, excellence, change” as well as “masking,
vaccinations, fear, fatigue, remote work, social isolation, weariness, racial tension”. Thankfully, the first list of words is the first to emerge and the second list follows at a distance. I am reminded though of the great need for wellness and mitigation of burnout during these most challenging times in our lives, and thus the second list of words also requires our attention. As we together enter into the holiday season, embracing many world religious celebrations and holidays, I wish you each a relaxing, healthy, and fulfilling holiday season with your loved ones! Take time to reflect on all of our collective PM&R achievements. Embrace old traditions and start new activities that bring you peace, love and joy! Stay safe! In the spirit of the holidays, I
offer my wishes for a truly wonderful 2022! P.S. please excuse any accomplishments/ highlights/ individual recognition that I may have missed above.
