Click here National Diabetes WeekLast week was National Diabetes Week and during the week, we launched the take PART resources (Physical Activity Resources for Type 1) with the community, sports associations and stakeholders. We highlighted some of our key projects that aligns with this year's theme, 'Impact of Diabetes Tech' - on social media and our PCH Diabetes morning tea. The 'Diabetes Bingo Game' was wheeled around the hospital wards and on display in the Discovery Centre for children to play and learn more about T1D. Thank you to all those who took part in events, who have been involved in our research throughout the year and to the families who are living with T1D, our work could not be possible without your help and support. Here's our recap of National Diabetes Week 2024
Take PART LaunchWe were excited to launch the take PART resources (Physical Activity Resources for Type 1) with the help of sport stars including West Coast Eagles player Jamie Cripps and former Perth Wildcats champion Shawn Redhage, along with the T1D community. The first-of-its-kind resources were co-designed with youth living with T1D, parents and coaches to help coaches better understand the condition and to encourage youth living with T1D to stay active. ABC Radio InterviewWe all know exercise is important for good physical and mental health in all people, but there are additional benefits for people living with T1D including optimising blood glucose levels - leading to fewer health complications later in life. Hear from PCH Diabetes Service Clinical Lead, Dr Craig Taplin, on why we co-developed the T1D sports resources, along with mother/ son duo Robyn and Sam on why these resources are great for families and community coaches. Meet Oscar HoganWhen Oscar’s brother, Hugo was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) at age 5, he learnt that this life-long condition was relentless. All he wanted was for his brother to live a normal, healthy life. So Oscar decided he wanted to help make that happen by studying a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Science at Notre Dame University. During #NationalDiabetesWeek2024, we spoke to Oscar, a student volunteer with our Centre, to find our more about his story.
Diab HQ is on the way!Over the coming months, WA children living with T1D will be given the opportunity to participate in DiabHQ, an innovative new data platform that brings together different types of diabetes data and information for access by patients and families, clinicians and researchers through three customised portals. Patients & families will have access to an app that will allow them to view their own diabetes data, connect with their care team, access resources & learning, enrol to studies and much more. Supporting Families GrantThanks to the generous support of West Australians, new funding from Channel 7’s Telethon Trust will help develop a much-needed clinical pathway to support families with kids who have early-stage T1D.
Diagnosis to Consumer RepWhen Danae’s son Jack came into the kitchen crying one morning saying his tummy hurt, Danae knew something wasn’t right. Her motherly instinct told her Jack was in trouble and she needed to get him to hospital straight away. Danae drove Jack to hospital not knowing what to expect next. Find out more about Danae and Jack’s T1D diagnosis story, and why Danae became a Consumer Representative with the Rio Tinto Children's Diabetes Centre, a JDRF Global Centre of Excellence.
