Brown researchers lead a team of scientists in a new NSF-funded project to establish a climate and health research hub for the New England coast. The study will focus on the Port of Providence and Port of Galilee in Rhode Island, and two ports in Maine, to address climate change related challenges faced by low-lying communities in New England. New NIH requirements for foreign subrecipients research documents
New requirements for foreign subrecipients to provide copies of “all lab notebooks, all data, and all documentation that supports the research outcomes” with each scientific update apply to new/renewed foreign subawards issued after 10/1/23.

Use of generative AI technologies is prohibited for the NIH peer review process
NIH is revising its Confidentiality Agreements for Peer Reviewers to prohibit reviewers from using AI tools in analyzing and critiquing NIH grant applications and R&D contract proposals, which violate NIH’s peer review confidentiality requirements.

NSF mandated use of SciENcv in proposals submitted on or after 10/23/23
OSP is joining with Andrew Creamer in the University Library to offer training. Join us for a virtual session to learn about the SciENcv system, specifically how to generate the required documents for NSF submissions. Thurs., 8/17 at 2pm. Add to calendar.

Sponsored project reporting guidance and delinquent report notification
Annual and final narrative reports are the PI's opportunity to demonstrate milestones achieved. Overdue reports can adversely influence a sponsor's perception of both the PI and University. Delinquent report notices will be escalated as outlined.

NOAA/Dept of Commerce transition from GrantsOnLine to GEMS
The new system is called GEMS (Grants Enterprise Management Solution). To create a PD/PI account for grant applications, you must first register through eRA Commons. View instructional video. GEMS external website coming soon!

U.S. Department of Education - G5/G6 changes coming this month
The U.S. Department of Education is currently working to build G6, a new and modernized grants and financial management system. View announcement.

NIH revises budgeting guidance for data management and sharing costs
In proposals submitted on or after October 5, 2023, DMS costs may be requested in standard cost categories, not as a single separate line item. However, DMS-related costs should be identified in the budget justification. View notice.

The MIT Faculty Founder Initiative program provides hands-on opportunities to learn from industry leaders about their experiences, ranging from licensing technology to creating early startup companies. Sony Corporation's 2023 Research Award Program
The Sony Focused Research Award provides an opportunity for university faculty, research institutes, and Sony to conduct collaborative, focused research. Applications are accepted until 9/15/23. Learn more and apply. Please contact your Tech Innovations director with any questions.

AtomICs wins 2023 Heartland Challenge Award
Brown startup AtomICs secured the 2023 Heartland Challenge and Delta Solar Innovation Awards at the Heartland Challenge venture capital competition. AtomICs won more than $50,000 for their patented data storage and retrieval processes.

Brown Technology Innovations sees rise in invention disclosures
Tech Innovations has received more invention disclosures in FY23 than at this point last year. BioMed, School of Engineering, and Computer Science lead the way with Brown having a total of 94 invention disclosures for the fiscal year. 

 

Research Integrity

Collaborating with people in embargoed countries
Remote collaboration with people in comprehensively embargoed countries (Iran, North Korea, Syria, Cuba, and regions of Ukraine) requires federal government licenses. Contact exportcontrol@brown.edu to discuss collaborations in advance.

New NSF RCR requirement - Jul 31, 2023
NSF awards made on proposals submitted after July 31, 2023 will require all personnel to complete RCR training.
