Welcome

Welcome to Issue 54 of Sweet Bites, and month four of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Restrictions have started to loosen in Australia and New Zealand, and we can see some glimmers of hope for the future, however there are many expressing a desire for a new and better normal. In this issue we take a look at a new report commissioned by the George Institute of Global Health, Sugar in Australia: A Food System Approach. The report uses sugar as an example of modern food systems and the factors at play that create economic rather than health outcomes. Creating better food systems as a part of the post pandemic recovery would be a silver lining to the COVID-19 cloud.

Our News items feature a new publication from the World Health Organisation (WHO) on nutrition through the life course, and a summary of research by Professor Elaine Rush from Auckland University of Technology on New Zealand’s food exports and imports in relation to dietary guidelines.

From the journals we’ve gathered citations and key findings from ten papers on sugars, carbohydrates and health including a discussion on how food taxes and subsidies might protect health in New Zealand, how more carbohydrates in the morning might help women with gestational diabetes, and a paper looking at the association between an optimistic disposition and diet quality, food group consumption and snacking behaviour – relevant research in these difficult times.

We hope you enjoy this issue and invite you to be in touch if you have any feedback or suggestions for topics for future articles.
