7 July 2026

Water and roading infrastructure in the city’s northwest is being upgraded to make sure these essential services continue to meet the needs of our growing communities.

In progress and completed works

Harewood Road stage 3 is under way

Stage 2 and 3 of the project to replace water supply pipes on Harewood Road are under way, following the substantial completion of stage 1.

Our contractors Schick Civil Construction are working in two locations – east of Greers Road, replacing the water main between Wilmot Street and Greers Road (stage 2), and in the section of Harewood Road between Greers Road and Farrington Avenue (stage 3).

For stage 3, one westbound lane will be closed while our contractors replace water supply pipes on that side of Harewood Road.

We’re also doing some night works to reduce the disruption to road users at the Harewood Road/Greers Road intersection. Night works will take place during the following periods:

  • From 5 July for about two weeks, Sundays to Thursdays (no work on Friday and Saturday nights). This work is complex, so it is difficult to accurately estimate how long this section will take, but we anticipate it being no longer than two weeks.
  • To connect the water main pipes, our contractor will need to come back for a third time. This is currently scheduled for late July and should only take two nights.

Each of these times work will start in the northern half of the intersection and then move to the southern half.

Traffic impacts will be different while working in each half of the intersection. Please allow some extra time for your journey and follow the signage.

Nor’West Arc cycleway and wastewater upgrade – Matsons Avenue, Chapel Street, Harewood Road

From Wednesday 15 July, Matsons Avenue will be one-way between Condell Ave and Harewood Road (with traffic flowing towards Harewood Road), until December. This will provide a safe working environment for our contractor Isaac Construction while crews are upgrading the stormwater and wastewater infrastructure on Matsons Avenue.

Wastewater works on Harewood Road and Chapel Street are progressing well. On Harewood Road, crews are continuing to work westbound as planned, with traffic flowing along either side of the work site. Chapel Street will continue to be closed to through traffic between Harewood Road and Hoani Street for the next few weeks.

More information on the Nor’West Arc work, including the latest work notices, is available at ccc.govt.nz/ norwestarc

Work completed on three water supply projects

Our contractors have completed their work to replace water supply pipes on:

  • Morrison Avenue/Langdons Road
  • Memorial Avenue/Greers Road water supply
  • Wairakei Road (northern end).

Replacing water pipes as they age and start to fail is critical to keeping clean water flowing to Christchurch whānau and communities. Thank you for your patience during these works.

Wastewater pipe replacement, Wairakei Road

In September, Dormer Construction will start work to replace ageing wastewater and water supply pipes on Wairakei Road between Ilam Road and Grahams Road.

We’re replacing wastewater pipes on this section of Wairakei Road with larger ones to increase the capacity of the network and meet increasing demand. We’re also replacing small sections of water supply pipe and connecting into the new water main on Greers Road, just south of the intersection with Wairakei Road.

Construction work will start at the Ilam Road end in late August and progress in stages, finishing at Grahams Road in December 2027. The new pipes will connect with the new wastewater pipes on Aorangi Road (part of the recent Nor’West Arc cycleway and wastewater upgrades project) and the new water supply pipes on Greers Road. We won’t be working in the Aorangi Road/Wairakei Road intersection for this project.

We’ll be working closely with businesses, residents and other organisations in the area to make sure they’re aware of what’s happening and when, and the plans in place to keep traffic flowing.
