What's On in Central Otago - November

Rhythm, Rhyme and Raconteurs. Photo Credit - Bill Siddell. The inaugural 'Rhythm, Rhyme and Raconteurs' took place in Galloway last week. Ray Wright, (member of The Poetry Party and the event organiser), wrote the following: "The team from The Poetry Party gathered at the Galloway Hall in good time to light the fire set up the BBQ and share a bottle of bubbles - a fitting start to a very special evening. People started arriving at 4 pm, along with a rain shower and high winds.
Not to be deterred the sausages went on to cook, and our first singer/ songwriter set up ready to entertain. The music was so good most of us moved in a dance-like fashion. Our MC introduced our posthumous patron, Todd Symons, whose poetry skills were honed at the very schoolhouse on the Galloway. Todd's daughter read her favourite poem from Todd's book ‘A Place to Call Home'. Approximately 12 people chose to entertain by volunteering their names on the blackboard program. 60 guests contributed to the success of the event and may have provided enough enjoyment to ensure it is back next year. As a night of homegrown music, poetry and storytelling, there was no moment of disappointment and lots of applause and banter. No one had too much to do, no one had too little to eat, and no one will miss next year if it repeats - I'm sure of that. Thanks to The Poetry Party team, and thanks
from all of us, for a good community effort". We continue to celebrate the written word with the recent success of two Oturehua writers in the New Zealand Heritage Literary Awards. Brian Turner's 'Selected Poems' won a special poetry book award and Jillian Sullivan won the poetry category with her work 'The Huts'. The winners of the Heritage Literary Awards were presented toward the end of last month in Christchurch. This event was organised as part of the Christchurch Heritage Week supported by the City Council, Scorpio Books, and Wily Publications Ltd. Due to the popularity of previous events, the Alexandra Library are revisiting The Human Library.
