We are already over halfway through the first term, and I hope you have been enjoying your classes and getting involved in the activities going on around the Law School. Many of you will now be working on assessments, both formative and summative. With that in mind, this month’s bulletin provides information on the Law School’s modified word limit policy, as well as shining a spotlight on the wellbeing services available should you need support. This week also saw the first meeting of the Student Staff Liaison Committee and the Law Fair, and there are plenty of extra-curricular and careers focused activities to come. Professor Joasia Luzak, Head of Law School SpotlightThis month our Spotlight is on the resources available to support you, perhaps particularly important during assessment periods. Charlotte Vereker, who focuses on Law within the Amory Welfare team, says “If you have concerns about your academic or other progress, need support for an on-going health or wellbeing difficulty or need signposting for specialist advice you can connect with one of our Education Welfare Advisors by email on welfare.amory@exeter.ac.uk." You can find a lot of useful information on our website, as well as how to book an initial appointment. In addition, the welfare team runs an instant chat between 12:30pm and 2:00pm, Monday to Friday on the website. The wellbeing team are also involved with lots of activities planned as part of 'Movember', from advice sessions and baking to Lego building. Open to all! Education Matters Word Limit Policy: In response to feedback from students and staff, the Law School has modified its approach to word limits for summative assessments starting this academic year. We sent you information about this and a guidance document by email last week, and you can also find the guidance document on the Law School Gateway here. If you have any questions about these changes, you can ask them on this form or speak to your student Department Officers or Academic Representatives who can either help directly or pass on your query or concern. Industrial Action: Many of you will already be aware that colleagues who are members of the UCU may be involved in three days of national strike action on Thursday 24 November, Friday 25 November and Wednesday 30 November. Information about the planned action and how this might impact you can be found here. An update from Professor Tim Quine, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education and Student Experience, was circulated on Monday – you can access the full message and previous messages online. The University has also set up a dedicated email address for queries: industrialaction@exeter.ac.uk. As a Law School, we will let you know as soon as there is anything further to report relating to your specific programmes and will be liaising with your student Academic Representatives as needed. TrainingThe University of Exeter is offering innovative training this year where you can learn to become an active bystander and skilfully intervene in any potentially harmful situations that you witness on or off campus. The Exe-change the Norm programme will help increase your awareness of gender- based violence, misogyny and racism in all its forms. The training then provides further sessions that allow you to practice scenarios and how you would intervene, as well as opportunities to ask questions. The programme can not only count towards your Exeter Award, but upon completing the bystander programme journey through Handshake you can get an endorsement for your LinkedIn profile. Over 250 students have already attended training and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Francesca Wheatstone, LLB Law and Business said “It has been so empowering to be able to participate in the bystander training. I have learnt so much already and look forward to the next sessions to complete my training. The training has been completely inclusive, informative, and also really interesting. These qualifications will also be useful for my CV, in showing further commitments than my degree. I really hope more students sign up to this brilliant training.” Opportunities and EventsBelow are just a few of the many things available for you to join in with or attend.
