Welcome from the Acting Head of Exeter Law School

Welcome to the November edition of our newsletter.

Photo of Doctor Richard Bowyer, Acting Head of Law School

It was such a pleasure to see so many of you at the recent Law School Social; I hope you got a chance to meet students and staff you hadn’t connected with previously. We plan to bring you similar events in 2026, so please don’t hesitate to share any ideas you have for these events with me or David Yuratich.

Opportunities are coming up for you to feedback to us on your experience of the Law School, including on your modules. We really value this feedback and hope it is part of a wider conversation where we can co-create the best possible student experience.

In this month’s edition, we have a range of advice covering OSCOLA referencing, assessments, and news of an extra Career Zone drop-in. I hope you find it useful.

Best wishes,
Richard,
Dr Richard Bowyer, Acting Head of Exeter Law School

Education Matters with David Yuratich

Hello!

We hope that this term has been enriching for you academically and personally. Around this time, you should be receiving feedback on your first formatives of the term. You can access this via the module submission point on ELE. This year, you should click on the blue pencil underneath the Turnitin report to see your feedback.

Please take time to consider all of the feedback available, whether individual or general (to the whole cohort):

  • Seek clarifications on the feedback or substantive points of law with academic staff during their office hours or during class time (where this has been used for feedback). We cannot provide further feedback beyond that which the marker has provided you but can help you understand what the marker has said.
  • Ask yourself if there are common themes across the feedback you receive in different subjects, or from last year to this year, and consider how you can improve. Our academic tutoring resources and worksheets will help you to do this, and you can find this on the ELE Gateway.
  • Focus on the feedback, not the mark.

Try not to worry about your feedback, it’s there to help you improve. If you find you are worrying about it, it’s best to speak to your seminar tutor, module convenor and/or academic tutor to discuss your understanding of the law and sources of additional support.

Don’t forget we also have the following support available to you:

  • Our wellbeing services team
  • Your Pastoral Mentors, Sarah and Jay: Get their contact details here

Now is also an important time to reflect on career planning. Seek support from the Career Zone on whether and how to apply for vacation schemes and training contracts – as well as opportunities outside of law if that is your goal. We also recognise that students may not be ready to commit themselves to a particular career path, and that is OK too! Whatever stage you are at, and whatever your goals, do make use of all of the support available, whether that’s the Career Zone or your academic tutor.

Best wishes,
David

Spotlight on Law Careers Fair

A reminder to come along to the Great Hall on Wednesday 19 November for the Law Careers Fair, sponsored by Michelmores LLP.
Between 12:30 and 15:30 we'll be welcoming a range of companies who will be available to talk through training contracts, vacation schemes and postgraduate study opportunities. It provides a unique opportunity to meet and speak informally with recruiters about the opportunities available and how you can pursue a career in the legal sector.
Please ensure that you have your University ID card (UniCard) with you.

Please note, the first half hour of the fair, from 12:30-13:00, will be a ‘quiet half hour’ to allow students with additional needs easier access to the fair. To attend the quiet half hour, you will need to book a space here. As spaces are limited for this time, please only book if you require the quiet half hour.

You can find more information about the fair, including exhibitors attending, here and on Handshake too.

Assessment Q&A

Promotional poster for a University of Exeter Law School event titled “Ask David! Law Assessment Q&A.” It announces an online Teams session on Tuesday, 18 November from 1:00–2:00 pm. Students are encouraged to send their questions via a link in the bio and check their email for the Teams link. The poster mentions that Dr. David Yuratich will answer questions ahead of assessment deadlines and that the session will be recorded and uploaded to ELE. The design includes an image of Dr. Yuratich sitting at a desk with an open book, surrounded by illustrations of books, a question mark, and thought bubbles. The University of Exeter Law School logo appears at the bottom.

If you don't get the chance to join in with Tuesday's lunchtime Assessment Q&A led by David Yuratich (13:00-14:00), there will be a recording uploaded to ELE shortly afterwards. You'll be available to hear David answering students' questions ahead of assessment deadlines.

Additional Careers Drop-In

Your feedback helps us to better understand and improve your student experience.
Many of you said the Law careers drop-in with Tess Read on Thursdays(13:00 - 14:00) clashed with timetabled lectures so Tess is running an additional drop-in on Mondays 13:30 - 14:30 in the pod in the Career Zone. Come along for a confidential chat with Tess, the Employability and Career Consultant for law students, about any career matters.

If you have suggestions for the way we can improve your student experience please reach out to a member of academic staff, your academic tutor or a Law Student Rep. You can find your Reps on the Students' Guild webpages.

Oscola Hour

OSCOLA Referencing: guidance and support

Your friendly Law Library Support Team is here to help you build your skills and knowledge of the OSCOLA referencing system.  Advice is on hand via chat, email or 1:1 appointments.

The team has pulled together lots of useful support in the online Citing Legal Sources using OSCOLA online guide. That guide is available 24/7 wherever you are studying so is ideal to have on hand as you work on your assignments.

During term time you can join an on campus or online OSCOLA Hour on a Monday. Come along and ask your OSCOLA questions. No need to stay for the full hour, just dip in and ask your questions.

And if you like a challenge, why not take on the brand new OSCOLA challenge? See if you can solve the clues and crack the OSCOLA code.
