Transitioning to Prep and OSHC

Nutrition Tips

Starting school and attending OSHC for the first time can be a big change in a child’s eating patterns. The routine and structure of school means that they may be eating at different times than they are used to, snack or lunch breaks can be shorter, and they need that extra energy to concentrate in the classroom!

Click on the fact sheet below to review some strategies that might help children adjust to the school and OSHC food environment. Please feel free to share this resource with families.

Activities

Click on the below prep transition lunchbox activity - this is a fun way for educators to teach prep-ready children how to build a lunchbox safely. This activity incorporates the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and Element 2.1.3 of the National Quality Standard.

Identifying allergic reactions

Are you confident in identifying allergic reactions in children? Allergic reactions can occur within minutes, and it is essential we are aware of the signs and symptoms so that we can act quickly. Watch the short video below for a useful guide.

Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia provides up to date and evidenced based information on allergies and anaphylaxis, including for children. Allergy management resources for schools and OSHC services can be located here.
