MISTRAS member Onstream Pipeline Inspection successfully developed and deployed their newest TriStream MFL™ inline inspection (ILI) tool in Mexico. This was not only the inaugural run for the 36” version, but was an Onstream first by performing a job in Mexico as well. As the company’s legacy Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) tool, the TriStream MFL™ is designed to inspect lines ranging from 4-36” in diameter. The Mexico run proved valuable to the client and additional runs are expected.
In addition to the TriStream MFL™, Onstream also provides pipeline inspection data services, used to perform integrity assessments to support engineering and dig decisions.

Aiming for the Moon(shot)
MISTRAS was awarded the role as the lead non-destructive testing (NDT) specialist by UK National Highways to demonstrate and evaluate inspection methods as part of a special research project named the “Structures Moonshot.”
This project seeks to redefine methods of concrete and post tension inspection, using modern non-invasive technologies, to enable bridge engineers to carry out more effective asset management, prevent serious bridge collapses, and extend asset lifetimes. As part of the work, the MISTRAS UK team conducted acoustic emission (AE) testing, guided wave UT, pulse echo tomography, impact echo and GPR scanning on a decommissioned post tension bridge, non-invasively confirming concrete dimensions, internal construction, flaws, and deterioration as well as active wire breaks from the failure of tendons.
The research project’s findings will be disseminated to bridge engineers across the UK, which may lead to increased demand for advanced NDT and monitoring.

Swine Scans for Prime Cuts
MISTRAS recently conducted a series of X-rays on a swine for a customer who manufactures pork-cutting equipment. They were searching for a more streamlined solution that can help to improve their equipment and the cuts of pork produced. Various scans were developed, and additional tests may be scheduled down the road. This is an important customer that conducts automation in the food, utilities, and other hygiene-sensitive industries.

Scam Spotted. Crisis Averted.
This story, originally published in the November 2023 issue of inSIGHT Digest, has been updated with additional information.
A significant catch was made by Talina McDaniel, who recently shut down a scam before it had a chance to do lasting damage. When the team received a Request for Quotation (RFQ) from a well-known oil and gas company located in Kuwait, they immediately began working on it. Just hours away from submitting the bid, Talina recalled a recent scam that MISTRAS had previously encountered, which prompted her to conduct an online search.
Talina's research quickly confirmed suspicions, and the project was shut down before confidential information could be inadvertently shared with imposters. This serves as a great reminder to be vigilant about safety and communicate your concerns, even when a project is nearing the finish line.
Thank you, Talina, for making such an important discovery.

Early influences | My parents and grandparents were the most influential part of my life as a young child. The foundation they gave me is the reason for where I am today. I never realized how poor we were growing up because they had a magical way of making everything seem normal. We were a resourceful family—growing our own food, making our clothes, and more. My grandmother even made her own soap! We were two families living in one house with just one bathroom, a stark contrast to how my family and I live today, which really puts things into perspective for me.

First work experiences | Started shining shoes at 7 at a nearby Greek coffee house down the street from home. Later roles included working in a steel mill, as a short-order cook, and a forklift driver, leading up to my first major role as a sales engineer at Carrier Air Conditioning.

Best business decision you’ve ever made | Growing up in Canonsburg, I remember seeing famous resident Perry Como arrive in a limousine — something I had never seen up close before. This inspired me to own one someday. Achieving this at age 35 was one of my best business decisions.
