Community  and Stakeholder Update

December 2023

You're invited to visit the new Altona Pier!

After a bumper eight months of construction Altona’s brand-new pier is open and just in time for holiday fun by the water! We’re so pleased to open this stunning new pier for the community, delivered with an $11.9 million investment from the Victorian Government.

We’re sure you’ll agree that the new pier is the perfect place to visit while walking with a morning coffee or to unwind after work during sunset.

Community consultation was an important first step in this project and the pier’s beautiful timber decking underfoot is a result of listening and delivering on what the community asked for. The pier’s handrails and lighting ensure it’s a safer place to visit day and night, and the low landing’s accessible ramp means all visitors can venture down near the water to enjoy the bay breezes this summer.

We know the community has watched from the foreshore with interest as this new structure has appeared in the bay, providing a free masterclass in maritime engineering. Back in winter, the first piles were installed, providing a first look at the pier’s new footprint. Over the months there has been visible progress and the resulting structure is stunning.

The new alignment means the pier can be better viewed from Pier Street, improving its connection to Altona Village. The old pier is now removed, and some elements will live on as part of Council’s foreshore redevelopment upgrades, installed as public art and furniture.

Final touches coming in the new year

Contractors have worked tirelessly to ensure Altona Pier is open for summer enjoyment. It’s a fantastic achievement with a few minor touches remaining for completion in the new year.

This includes the reinstatement of the sea wall near the pier entry and installation of final seating elements. These aspects will be finalised early in 2024, with minimal impact to pier visitors.

Showing appreciation!

We thank the community for their patience as we’ve worked to deliver this significant project for Altona. Thank you to our partners and stakeholders who have helped in the delivery of this major project, the Altona Village Traders Association, Altona Lifesaving Club, Western Suburbs Triathlon Club and Hobsons Bay City Council.

Learn more about summer safety on water

A safer summer on the water

As summer hits, it’s time to remind everyone to always stay safe around water and on our piers. Jumping and diving from piers is always dangerous due to the risk of harm. Unlike a swimming pool, the water’s depth beneath our piers is constantly changing and often very shallow. This means the impact from jumping or diving into shallow water, or onto a submerged object can lead to serious injury or death.
