There has been a significant increase in hepatitis cases among children aged under ten in the UK in recent months. Hepatitis, which is inflammation of the liver, can be caused by a variety of things – but in children the cause is most often a virus. What is unusual about these cases is that none of the usual hepatitis viruses have been detected in any of the young patients. Consequently, some have questioned whether COVID-19 might play a role.

As microbiologist Conor Meehan explains, the cause is more likely to be another virus, called an adenovirus. But we don’t know for sure yet. While the COVID pandemic continues, we must routinely consider coronavirus as a possible cause for unusual outbreaks of illness.

After Boris Johnson yesterday apologised to parliament for attending one of the Downing Street lockdown parties, we hear how new data suggests declining trust in the prime minister damages trust in Britain’s democracy as a whole. Plus, the war in Ukraine is opening a new era in war reporting.

Hepatitis cases are increasing among children in the UK – could COVID have a role to play?

Conor Meehan, Nottingham Trent University

While COVID-19 hasn’t been ruled out as a potential cause, the leading contender is actually adenovirus, a common infection in children that can lead to hepatitis on rare occasions.
