It’s Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, and many may turn to dating apps to find a match. Dating apps have become a fixture of modern dating, and apps catering to particular ethnic, cultural or religious communities have sprung up — all promising to help users find a good match. But are these apps also limiting our ability to get to know people of different backgrounds and cultures?
Today in The Conversation Canada, Manlin Cai and Yue Qian from the University of British Columbia explain the rise of “digital Chinatowns” and what they mean for Chinese immigrants looking for love. Chinese-geared dating apps can offer them an alternative to the often isolating experience of using other apps. But they also argue that modern dating apps are not a catch-all solution for those looking to make meaningful connections.
