An update on the Woolston Village Upgrade

Kia ora koutou and welcome to the first edition of our project newsletter for 2021.
We're pleased to report that work is steadily trucking along the north side of Woolston Village. Not only has the weather  been great, so has the wonderful Woolston community. Ice blocks and water on searingly hot days, encouraging words and friendly chats – it all helps. Thank you, Woolston! We really appreciate your ongoing support and patience.

What we’ve done

We’ve poured the new kerb and channel (gutter) at the east and west ends of our work site, rebuilt and asphalted the road shoulder (edge of the road) between St Johns Street and the New World truck exit and have finished the asphalt at the Portman Street corner.

What’s coming up

This week we will:

Start work on the last 25 metres of storm water drainage work on the north side of Ferry Road, between the car park beside Night N’ Day and the Woolston Pharmacy.

Pour the remaining section of kerb and channel (now we’ve finished the tricky section of storm water drainage work between the New World truck exit and Woolston library).

Continue road shoulder and footpath work.

Install temporary traffic loops (activation sensors) at the new signalised pedestrian crossing between St John’s Church and Finders Keepers. We’ll do this at night to minimise the impact on nearby businesses.

After Waitangi weekend:

Council’s traffic light specialists will check the functionality of the lights then they’ll be ready for use.

Late January/early February:

When work moves away from the Portman Street intersection, one team will start work on the south side of Ferry Road at the entrance to the Three Boys Brewery car park. We’ll deliver information and speak to affected businesses before this work starts.

Mr Fix-It

Neil Andrews is the person who comes to the rescue when roadworks go wrong in Woolston. He’s a fan of a good yarn, so especially enjoys the memories and stories that long-time residents of Woolston like to share.
As Council’s Contracts Engineer, Neil also loves a good problem. He travels between a number of work sites in all weathers at all times of day and night, checking to make things are built as planned and coming up with the best solutions when there’s a problem.

Please cross safely

We would like to encourage people to use the dedicated pedestrian crossings to cross Ferry Road safely, as we've had few reports of people walking into the path of vehicles trying to access off street parking.
