Co-governance at the heart of future plans
for Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor

Ngāi Tūāhuriri, the community and Christchurch City Council will co-govern the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor (ŌARC).

“Co-governance must be at the heart of the continued development of this special part of our city,’’ says Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel.

At yesterday’s meeting, the Council confirmed the co-governance entity would comprise equal representation by Ngāi Tūāhuriri and the Council. Some of the Council’s representatives on the new entity, however, will be appointees drawn from local communities.

Medway Street bridge span successfully lifted into place

The return of foot and cycle access across the Ōtākaro Avon River at Medway Street is another step closer after the new Medway Street Bridge span was successfully lifted into place by crane two weeks ago.

Ghost lights to be removed

More than 600 redundant street light fittings will be removed over the coming weeks along the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor.
Along with those in the ŌARC, a small number of redundant light fittings are being removed from parts of the Brooklands and South New Brighton regeneration areas.

Mana whenua blesses OARC landing and bridge sites

The Dallington Landing and three new bridge sites in the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor have been blessed.
The blessings were led by a mana whenua representative, signalling an important milestone as the Regeneration Area continues evolving into an urban park asset for the city.

Road closures to make way for City to Sea pathway

Christchurch City Council is taking steps to close some short sections of road so that a new City to Sea pathway can be built.
The Council has agreed to begin the process for formally stopping – and eventually closing – a 900m section of Avonside Drive between 748 Avonside Drive and Wainoni Rd, and a 100-metre section of Kerrs Road, between the northernmost house and Avonside Drive.

Youngster sowing seeds to help those in need

At 12 years of age Jordan Wilson is the youngest person to be granted a temporary land use licence for Christchurch’s Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor regeneration area.

His vision of creating a community garden was given the green light by Toitū Te Whenua/ Land Information New Zealand in July.

ANZAC fronds unveiled in new home

In mid-November the Anzac Fronds were unveiled in their new position at the Anzac Drive-New Brighton Road intersection.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel officially opened the newly-replaced sculptures, and the Rāwhiti School kapa haka group performed several songs for those in attendance.
