The Community Panel noted that although “girl math” is used by some as a humorous way to justify purchases, it conveys an inherently unflattering perspective on women and their financial literacy. The Panel found that despite the attempt at humour, the ad perpetuates a negative stereotype that women are bad with money. The ad breached Section 2.1 (Discrimination or vilification) of the Code of Ethics. Upheld - AANA Code of Ethics (Discrimination or vilification) Nitrous nonsenseThis digital ad featured an image of a pile of silver nitrous oxide cylinders and the text "Nang Delivery 24/7 Melbourne". The Community Panel acknowledged that the product being advertised contains nitrous oxide which is originally intended for whipping cream, however recognised that it is often abused as a drug. The Panel considered that the picture of a pile of discarded cylinders, the use of the slang term “nang” and the promotion of speedy delivery for bulk purchases at all hours combined to provide a strong suggestion that people should buy this product to inhale it. The ad breached Section 2.6 (Health and safety) of the Code of Ethics. Upheld - AANA Code of Ethics (Health and safety) Cargo kidsAn ad for Donohues, a clothing company, depicted a family on a farm travelling in a side-by-side utility terrain vehicle. The children were shown unrestrained and seated in the rear cargo area. The Panel acknowledged that while this may occur on some farms, it is dangerous and should not be encouraged. The ad breached Section 2.6 (Health and safety) of the Code of Ethics. Upheld - AANA Code of Ethics (Health and safety) Hungry for more? Check out these recently published decisions
