H D R I N F O C U SAlexandra Manson PhD candidate in the Caring Futures Institute (NHS) is exploring the potential adoption of school provided meals in Australia. She recently completed a six week international research field trip to the UK, Sweden and France to explore diverse school food service models. College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences PhD students Iriana Freitas De Jesus Ximenes and Collethy Jaru have been selected to participate in the esteemed 11th University Scholars Leadership Symposium, organised by Humanitarian Affairs. The annual symposium, being held in Bangkok from Tuesday 1 August, nurtures emerging leaders by giving them the confidence to lead sustainable development projects in their home communities. Two Flinders PhD students, Shweta Sahni and Fatemeh Malekvandfard, have been supported by a scholarship from Nourish Ingredients. The company is an Australian start-up company deploying precision fermentation to produce animal-like fats for the next generation of meat alternatives. Brad Martin, PhD candidate from the Ecosystem Resilience Lab in the College of Science and Engineering, has been awarded the Fisheries Research Development Corporation Prize for best oral presentation at the Australian Marine Sciences Association (AMSA) annual conference. Flinders' resident fungi expert, and Flinders PhD graduate, Dr Michael Taylor spoke with Flinders in Touch about his recent article published in The Conversation, and he explained how a trio of mischievous goats is creating havoc with his at-home experiments. Each week a different aspect of the Research and Employability Skills Training (REST) Program is spotlighted to help HDR students’ identify opportunities to progress with their skill development. ACSPRI Fellowship Program now open for applications.PhD candidates are invited to apply now for the 2023-24 ACSPRI Fellowship Program. Valued at $25,000, the fellowship will help PhD students to achieve their career goals, by providing direct financial support and professional development opportunities. Applications close on 30 September 2023. 3MT Competition UpdateThis year’s College Heats were held between the 21st and 23rd of June and the standard of the competition was phenomenal. All competitors did a fantastic job of explaining the scope and significance of their research. Some fierce debating went on in the judging room to decide who would progress to the next round. Congratulations to the twelve presenters who will be competing in the Semi-finals in August. We cannot wait to see how you use the judge’s feedback to improve your presentations. Library Induction for new HDR students and researchersThis session is a brief overview of library resources available and an opportunity for you to enhance your ORCID and your ResearchNow profile. Sessions are available on Monday 14 August (in person) and Monday 28 August (online). Keeping up to Date: Tracking current researchThis interactive online workshop on Tues 22 August for HDR students and researchers will guide participants through setting up alerts to keep up to date with new information on key research topics, people of interest, or when a new journal Table of Contents is available. The workshop will also cover citation alerts and how they can be used to keep participants informed of when their work, or the work of someone they wish to follow, is cited. M I N D Y O U R S E L FMindfulness for Academic SuccessMindfulness for Academic Success is an evidence-based wellbeing program designed for university students, aiming to reduce stress, improve focus, enhance communication, and increase efficiency. It runs over five weekly sessions and will run from Tuesday 15 August to 13 September from 10.00am-11.00am in person. Spaces are limited. Setting up for SuccessThis session run by Medibank is design to provide learnings that can be implemented into your everyday and set you up for success. In the session you will learn how to think, create and action your goals, how to prioritise your time and mange your energy. It is held online on Tuesday 15 August.
