What's On in Central Otago - August

This spectacular shot of the Blood Moon dropping behind the Old Man Range was captured by the Arts Trust Chairperson Roger Browne on
a frosty pre-dawn morning in Chapman Road, Earnscleugh. Roger braved the elements to take a series of shots with his Nikon D7100, 300mm telephoto lens - this particular image was published in the Otago Daily Times last week. The moon made another impressive appearance at the Light Up Winter celebrations in the Cromwell mall recently. The release of what seemed like thousands of amber coloured paper laterns coincided with an almost full moon sitting just above the Dunstan Ranges. This picturesque display, along with fire dancers, glittering fairies, luminous shop windows and authentic Chai warmed up an extremely chilly evening for the many
event attendees. There is plenty happening in Central Otago in the arts in the coming month. Due to the success of last years 'The Poetry Event' Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery, with support from Radio Central and the Arts Trust, are excited to announce National Poetry Day 2018. Join us on the 24th of August for poetry readings by local and international authors, a performance by the Alexandra Primary School Choir and a written word exhibition - entry is
free and everyone is welcome. During the lead up to National Poetry Day keep an eye out around the district for posters of poems written by New Zealand literary legends. These posters have been kindly supplied to the Arts Trust by Phantom Billlstickers and we intend to paste these in places where everyone can stop, read and enjoy. The release of 'View From the South' will be celebrated instore at Cromwell Paper Plus on the 22nd of August. Join New Zealand author Owen Marshall and Central Otago artist Grahame Sydney to talk about this recent publication of poems and photographic works. The Ranfurly Musical & Dramatic Society will be staging their 2018 production of' Snow White and the 7 Dwarves' from the 19th to the 25th of August at the Ranfurly Town Hall. After a long hiatus, the local Dramatic Society was brought to life again in 2017 with their very popular performance of 'Sleeping Beauty'. The show was a sell-out and after donating $6000 to the Maniototo Hospital rebuild it was decided that funds raised this year will be used primarily to replace some of the
drama clubs antiquated lighting and sound equipment. This will be an investment in the future of the group as well as a very entertaining night out. The Arts Trust is holding our Annual General Meeting on the 23rd of August at 6pm, at the Alexandra Community House. The evening is a good opportunity to learn more about what CODAT has achieved in the last year and the projects we have in store for the next 12 months. We are excited to announce that our guest speaker for the evening is Central Otago artist Bruce Potter. We look forward to seeing you all there.
