New Allergy Best Practice Guidelines

Earlier this month, the National Allergy Strategy released the Best practice guidelines for anaphylaxis prevention and management in schools and children's education and care (CEC) services.

The Guidelines have been developed through extensive consultation with key stakeholder organisations to provide consistent, evidence-based, best practice guidance for staff in schools, CEC services and parents.

To help schools and CEC services to meet the recommendations of the Guidelines, several supporting resources have been created. The supporting resources consider site specific issues relating to anaphylaxis prevention and management and put into place appropriate strategies to allow children at risk of anaphylaxis to safely participate fully in school and CEC service activities.

The Guidelines and supporting resources can be downloaded for free from the Allergy Aware resource hub. Click on the buttons to access information from other allergy organisations.

National Children's Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy

The National Mental Health Commission has developed the National Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy as part of the Australian Government’s long-term national health plan. This is the first time a national government has developed a strategy that considers mental health and wellbeing outcomes for children from birth to 12 years of age, as well as their families and communities who nurture them.

The Strategy provides a framework to guide the development of a comprehensive, integrated system of services to maintain and support the mental health and wellbeing of children aged 0-12 and their families to ensure children can have all the opportunities for growth and development possible.

Through four focus areas, the Strategy outlines the requirements for an effective system of care for children:

  1. Family and Community
  2. Service System
  3. Education Settings
  4. Evidence and Evaluation

Is salt good for you after all? The evidence says no

Most people have heard the advice to cut down on salt. That’s because high sodium intakes are associated with high blood pressure, a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, heart attacks and strokes. In the research article this headline is based on, the authors examined whether advice to substantially lower sodium intakes was supported by robust evidence. Read the full article here.

Recipe Idea

Zucchini Fritters

Ingredients
3 zucchinis, grated
3 spring onions, finely sliced
¼ cup fresh herbs (e.g. parsley, coriander), finely chopped
Cracked black pepper, to season
1 egg, beaten
½ cup grated parmesan cheese
½ cup self raising flour
Extra virgin olive oil
Tomato relish, to serve

Method
1. Place the grated zucchini in a colander or sieve and squeeze out as much excess moisture as possible.
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the zucchini, spring onions, fresh herbs, cracked black pepper, egg and parmesan cheese.
3. Stir in the self raising flour until combined.
4. Heat a little extra virgin olive oil in a large frypan over a medium heat.
5. Using a spoonful of the batter for each one, shape the fritters using your hands. Gently add to the pan. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side or until both sides are golden brown and the fritter is cooked through.
6. Repeat with remaining batter.
7. Serve with tomato relish, if desired.

Makes 10.
