What's on in Central Otago - May

An exciting exhibition of handmade aquatint prints by internationally renowned artist Euan Macleod, opened recently Cromwell. This dramatic body of works portrays people and place - some images referencing the environs of the wider Central Otago region. MacLeod's strong, enigmatic figures, moving through the landscape, are reminiscent of the energies of the pioneering spirit and the intensity with which landscape can affect us. Macleod's refined and masterful use of a traditional etching technique presents us with works displaying carefully manipulated painterly marks and tonal qualities unique to the aquatint etching process. This exhibition runs until May the 12th, and may be viewed daily from 10am - 4pm at Octa Gallery in the Cromwell Heritage Precinct.
Throughout April we were busily working on our latest Arts Trust project - Heroes and Icons. This resource will reference significant New Zealand artists who have an affiliation with Central Otago and describe how they have forged careers in the arts. Current Henderson House Artists in Residence, Gregory O'Brien and Jenny Bornholdt, will be the first to feature in Heroes and Icons. Keep an eye out on the arts website www.centralotagoarts.com for their inspiring contributions and a little
bit about what moves them to create. If you are considering entering this year's WoolOn Creative Fashion Event it is now time to commit! Entry forms need to submitted by the 7th of May and completed garments must be received by the 2nd of July. The 2018 event offers the addition of two new categories and extra opportunities for both experienced and new designers to showcase their talent in wool-based design. WoolOn is an exciting opportunity for people to
connect with and be inspired by our culture, heritage, and landscape, while showcasing the remarkable qualities of wool fibre and the ways in which this can be transformed into high fashion garments. In the past WoolOn has attracted entrants from both New Zealand and overseas indicating its growing prestige as a premium fashion experience. Visit www.woolon.co.nz to download an entry form or feel free to contact Kaye Sutherland, Designer Liaison Manager, by emailing entries@woolon.co.nz or phoning 0212168824. Finally, if a journey into the Wild West sounds appealing, go along to see students of Dunstan High School perform Irving Berlin's 'Annie get your Gun'. Directed by Nick Meissel and Bronwyn Barnes, this performance promises to be a fantastic one. Tickets are for sale now and can be purchased from the office at Dunstan High School.
