A note from the boardKia ora koutou, Summer is drawing to a close and while Canterbury's shift to red traffic light on January 23 saw the cancellation of some events, it did not dampen the popularity of Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood Pool. It is great to see our rangatahi making the most of this facility – especially for events such as the manu competition. In total there were 34,455 admissions to the facility between December and January. As a Board we are continuing to adapt to the challenges that COVID-19 presents. This includes finding a way for our community to join our Board meetings. All community board meetings are currently being live streamed on YouTube – see more details below. With the population levels in the central city higher than they were pre-earthquake, there is a lot for people to get involved in! Read more about the Community Pride Garden awards and your chance to nominate an outstanding volunteer for a community service award below. Ngā manaakitanga Board meeting talking pointsAt our last meeting on February 16, the Community Board finalised the successful grants and funding applications for the Sydenham Junior Cricket Club, the Graeme Dingle Foundation and St Johns Church and Community Centre. The Board has requested a review of the signage along Sumner Beach. Dogs aren't allowed on the beach between November 1 and March 31. The signage at Sumner Beach will be updated in the 22/23 financial year. A new patrol has been set up on Scarborough Beach where owners can take their dog to a swimming beach, in the meantime. The Community Board also received advice on the Arran Drain naturalising works, Clifton Hill access arrangements, Linwood Park temporary accommodation village mitigation, and Maces Road resurfacing. Upcoming funding, awards and engagementHave your say - Ōpāwaho Lower Heathcote Guidance Plan community engagementIn early 2021 you were invited to provide ideas for the future of the river. Since then Community Board members Alexandra Davids, Tim Lindley and Yani Johanson (Working Party chairperson) have been working with community members in the Ōpāwaho Lower Heathcote Working Party. The communities ideas have helped inform a draft guidance plan for future development along the Ōpāwaho River Corridor between the Opawa and Ferrymead Bridges. This plan is nearly ready for consultation which will begin later in March. Keep an eye on Council's Have Your Say webpage. Community Pride Garden Awards and Edible Garden Awards. The Linwood-Central-Heathcote Board take great pleasure in recognising and celebrating community contributions. The annual garden awards are one way we can lift up the champions of the Garden City. Both the Community Pride Gardens Awards, and the Edible Garden Awards are currently receiving nominations. The board has agreed that in lieu of the ceremonies this year certificates will be mailed to winners. The recipients of the awards will be photographed and included in a special edition Community Board Newsletter. Community Service Awards nominations openIt’s time to recognise the people who make our communities better places to live. Nominations are open for the annual Community Service Awards, run to make sure volunteers are thanked and honoured for their dedication. People from all sectors can be nominated – whether it's for youth, older adults, education, culture, church, recreation, sport or community service fields. Nominations are open until 5pm Thursday 14 April 2022. Successful recipients will receive awards at a ceremony hosted by their local Community Boards in June or July 2022. Have your say on the Ihutai-estuary and coastal Stormwater planDon't miss out on your chance to have your say on the way that Council manages stormwater in your area! The plans set out the ways the Council will meet the requirements of its 25-year Comprehensive Stormwater Network Discharge Consent (CSNDC), which was granted by Environment Canterbury in 2019. Consultation is now open and submissions can be made until 26 April 2022.
