Inspiration from our senior managers
As we reflect on 2022 and look ahead to the new year, we remain committed to the same bold belief: Every person in California should be able to live a healthy life. We recently asked our Senior Management Team what they are most excited for in 2023 in our pursuit of health, equity and racial justice in California.

Chet P. Hewitt, Sierra Health Foundation President and CEO and The Center CEO
As we near 2023, I’m excited about our emerging economic development work in under-resourced communities. Alongside our partners, we will help historically marginalized populations build capacity, gain knowledge and mobilize to direct the infrastructure and climate-resilient projects their communities need. Development must be done with – not to – communities for an inclusive and equitable economy. We will get there by increasing opportunities for local organizations to decide how public funds are spent and by diversifying who receives those funds. |

Kaying Hang, President of The Center and Sierra Health Foundation Senior Vice President of Programs and Partnerships
Ensuring that every person in California can live a heathy life is our organization’s North Star. As we look to 2023, I’m excited about our continued investment in people, technology and processes that will help us deepen our impact and reaffirm our commitment to an unapologetic focus on health and racial equity. |

Beatrix Koev, Chief Financial Officer
Healthcare is a basic human right, not a privilege. I’m excited for 2023 so that our work can help society pause and ask the question, “should we really profit off of the suffering of others?” Every small improvement has ripple effects, the positive measurable impact we can help co-create. |
Matt Cervantes, Managing Director of Healthy Youth Development
I’m excited to witness, cheerlead and support young people leading the movement for a more racially just California. |
Richard Dana, Managing Director of Economic Development
The time has come for business, institutions and community leaders to make collective decisions, and I look forward to seeing this as the first steps toward true inclusion in economic decision making. |
Ruth Jensen, Managing Director of Human Resources
I’m looking forward to supporting a team making a difference in our communities. |
Kendra Lewis, Managing Director of CEMI
I am most excited about the many collaborations that are being built with big, bold thinking and execution. I think 2023 is going to be just the tip of the iceberg for health, equity and racial justice and we are going to see collaborations like we have never seen before make change in real time. |
Maurice Samuels, Managing Director of Evaluation and Learning
Over the next year, I’m looking forward to building on what we know about addressing health, equity and racial justice while coming up with creative and new ways of using our financial, intellectual and human resources to improve the lives of individuals and communities that have been historically underinvested in. |
Reyna Villalobos, Managing Director of Regional Programs
I’m most excited for the diverse community collaborations, and policy and systems change intersectionality work that Sierra Health Foundation and The Center will embark upon and that address the social determinants of health, to ensure that every low-income Californian has increased opportunity for improved health and well-being outcomes, access to affordable healthcare and health coverage, education, economic well-being, stable housing, safe working conditions, drinkable water and livable wages. |
Aketa Marie Williams, Managing Director of Communications
Stories can change the world. They expand our collective imagination of what change is possible and necessary. I’m excited to tell more of our partners’ stories about how they are boldly improving well-being across California and redefining who is worthy of wellness. |
Sierra Health Foundation invests $1 million in community resilience
We’re pleased to announce our recent investment of $1 million in 13 California organizations. The awards span Sierra Health Foundation’s core priority areas: Children, Youth and Families; Economic Stability and Opportunity; Land, Water and Climate Equity; and Policy and Systems Change. These strategies focus on moving from recovery to resilience in communities that experience chronic public and private underinvestment. Learn more on our news page.
Funding opportunity: Community Economic Mobilization Initiative
California is on the cusp of receiving an unprecedented level of financial investments to strengthen its climate resiliency, transportation infrastructure and housing, among other areas. History has shown that quick economic development often results in limited and inequitable participation. Neighborhoods that have been traditionally under-resourced and home to vulnerable and historically marginalized populations usually do not influence the process or benefit from investments.
The Center launched the Community Economic Mobilization Initiative (CEMI) to assist nonprofits in building their knowledge and capacity so that they are poised to participate in these funding opportunities. A new CEMI funding opportunity is open to all organizations that meet eligibility criteria and requirements. Proposals are due Jan. 20. Learn more on the CEMI webpage.
Sierra Health Foundation joins California funders to support Guaranteed Income Pooled Fund
Governor Gavin Newsom announced the launch of the Guaranteed Income Pooled Fund, a philanthropic endeavor to help organizations fund their Guaranteed Income Pilot Programs by helping pilot projects unlock more than $25 million in grants from the state. The Pooled Fund will support select state-funded guaranteed income pilot projects in need of additional resources to launch, sustain or enhance their pilot. The pilot projects will collectively provide more than 1,975 Californians — primarily former foster youth and pregnant people — with $600 to $1,200 per month for 12 to 18 months.
Pooled Fund contributors include: Sierra Health Foundation, Silicon Valley Community Foundation, The California Wellness Foundation, Blue Shield of California Foundation, May and Stanley Smith Charitable Trust and the Weingart Foundation, with further contributions expected.

Asthma Mitigation Project year 2 evaluation report highlights funded partner experiences
Our Asthma Mitigation Project partners provide asthma home visiting services to individuals with poorly controlled asthma in low-income communities and communities with disproportionate rates of asthma throughout California. The project’s year 2 evaluation by Harder+Company highlights the experience of funded partners and participants. The report includes considerations for The Center and the California Department of Health Care Services to strengthen program delivery and inform the design and implementation of future asthma home visiting and preventive services initiatives.
Community Economic Development community partners celebrate at appreciation event
As we near the end of another collaborative year with our community partners, we reflect on our collective achievements. On Dec. 1, we gathered with partners from the Black Child Legacy Campaign, Community Responsive Wellness Program and the Sac Collab Vaccine Ambassador Program for a Holiday Appreciation Luncheon at The Atrium at Woodlake in Sacramento. The event provided an opportunity for partners to connect, relax and celebrate in a beautiful setting. The Center CEO Chet P. Hewitt and lead staff from each program offered words of gratitude to everyone present and others who work diligently to improve health and racial equity throughout our communities.
