Children and Covid-19Two minutes with Dr Andrew Martin Dr Andrew Martin, Head of General Paediatrics at Perth Children's Hospital, summarises what the symptoms are for Covid-19 in children, what they've learnt from their colleagues on the east coast of Australia, what to do if your child gets Covid-19 and when to take your child to the doctor or hospital. Symptoms to look out for include drowsiness, signs of dehydration, chest or abdominal pain, persistent fever and persistent dizziness or headaches. It provides information on the additional support to families of children with diabetes through the WA Covid Care at Home Program, and explains the use of Telehealth for Outpatient Clinics. Covid-19Vaccination StatementA reminder that vaccinations are available for all children from 5 years, with boosters now approved for those aged 16 and 17 years. We understand there may be many questions from parents and children so we’ve put together answers to the questions we have already received, and some we anticipate. Sick Day Management PlanNow is the time to make sure you have an up-to-date Sick Day Management Plan. Tips for a Sick Day Management plan include monitoring glucose frequently, check ketones if blood sugars are elevated or you feel unwell, and know how to clear ketones if levels become too high. A checklist can be found in Section 7 of the Type 1 diabetes folder. New School Year and DiabetesThe new school year has started and by now your child's school should have a copy of their updated Diabetes Management Plan. This is the time to touch base with the school and make sure they understand the plan and to answer any questions. New updated plans will be available soon, these will cover those using CGM which no longer require finger prick testing at school. G6 AnnouncementFrom 1 March 2022, the Dexcom G6 CGM system will be available through the NDSS to all our patients with type 1 diabetes. Users of the Dexcom G5 will be automatically updated to the Dexcom G6. Exercise Intervention StudyOur researchers are exploring the needs of young people with type 1 diabetes to be physically active. We are looking for adolescents aged 14-17 years with type 1 diabetes and parents of adolescents to give us some insight into their experiences around physical activity so that we can develop a physical activity program. Recruits NeededMonitoring food intake is important for people living with type 1 diabetes. That's why our researchers want to make the process easier. We are looking for people (9-18 years) with T1D to trial a Mobile Food Record App to take photos of what they eat and drink which can be automatically uploaded and viewed by a dietitian. New Study!We are looking for young Australians aged 14-17 years with type 1 diabetes to take part in a study of a self-compassion program delivered via zoom. The study involves weekly sessions (1.5 hours per week) for 8 weeks. To be eligible you will need to be diagnosed with T1D and using continuous glucose monitoring. Sports Coaches StudyOur researchers are developing resources to upskill coaches on type 1 diabetes so they can better support players. We need young people aged 8-21 years with type 1 diabetes or their parents, and sports coaches to participate in an online interview (about 1 hour) to help us develop the resources. |
