'Creating a healthier society through education, research, and clinical care’

That’s the mission of the Health Sciences University, the latest research organisation we’ve been lucky enough to work with.

We’re supporting the university’s Research Communications Champions Programme, working with academics in Bournemouth and London who are shaping the future of health sciences.

As part of this programme, we’ll help a select group of researchers – from postgraduate to associate professor – to develop their writing skills, increase the visibility of their work, and contribute to a culture of impactful communication.

Universal Impact Managing Director Matt Warren recently travelled to Bournemouth to deliver an in-person masterclass.

As The Conversation UK’s commercial subsidiary, Universal Impact helps researchers boost the reach and impact of their work, providing a wide range of bespoke training, mentoring and communications programmes.

Now, onto this week’s latest opportunities from across the world of research, communications and policymaking:

  • There’s £12.5 million of funding available for projects aimed at cutting emissions from farming. Researchers can apply for between £1 million and £2.5 million as part of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs's (Defra) Farming Innovation Programme, delivered in partnership with Innovate UK. The idea is to fund collaborative projects that support UK farming lower emissions. To lead a project, your organisation must be a UK registered business, academic institution or research and technology organisation. Deadline: 25 June.

  • The Florence School of Transnational Governance teaches and trains current and future leaders in "governance beyond the state”. The school, based at the European University Institute, looks at how to design effective and ethical policies on issues such as climate change, gender inequality, large-scale migration, and international security. Two new chairs have been opened in transnational law and digital governance and policy innovation. Deadline: 25 June.

  • You can now submit evidence to a new inquiry looking at how to stop  young people being "drawn into extremism, violence and crime" through online radicalisation. A Select Committee is investigating new forms of extremism and will assess whether the government is "keeping pace with the evolving threat”. The Home Affairs Committee is looking for written evidence around both “recent trends” and “remedies”. Deadline: 18 June.

  • The Cabinet Office supports the UK Prime Minister to "ensure the effective running of government”. The office is currently recruiting researchers to help develop an “evidence-based and impact-led approach to building the capability of the government workforce”. You can currently apply to be an evidence and impact lead (deadline: 29 May). The roles of research officer and senior research officer are also being advertised (deadline: 5 June).

  • Applications are currently open for a fellowship aimed at bridging the gap between artificial intelligence research and policymaking. The six-month programme is being organised by Mila, an AI institute based in Quebec, Canada. The part-time scheme will be delivered on a hybrid basis including some time working in-person at Mila. It’s open to researchers and professionals from public policy, the social sciences and humanities, including international candidates. A salary will be provided with travel costs also covered. Deadline: 2 June.

  • Here’s an interesting one for students from EU member states. The Euradio Academy is recruiting for a five-month immersive journalism training programme. The idea of the paid internship is to tell “Europe’s story from the heart of its institutions”. You’d be based in Strasbourg, reporting on the European Parliament, producing audio content and podcasts. The scheme is open to students studying for a bachelors or masters degree who are fluent in French and have a good level of English. Deadline: 31 May.

  • The Sutton Trust is looking for a new head of research and policy. You’d be responsible for overseeing a programme of policy-focused research into social mobility and educational inequalities. The charity is looking for someone with knowledge and experience of higher education, as well as government and the public policy environment. This is a full-time, permanent role which comes with a salary of between £56,000 and £64,000. Deadline: 21 May.

  • And you can currently pitch ideas for stories to New Lines Magazine, which showcases writing and ideas from around the world. Politics editor Danny Postel is looking for articles about “zombie ideas” which should be “consigned to the rubbish bin of history”. He’s seeking pieces which take aim at outdated, disproven or dangerous ideas that continue to shape politics, policy or public debate. Submissions will be considered on a rolling basis. Rates are usually $800 per article or $600 for shorter Spotlight pieces. Contact: dpostel@newlinesmag.com
