Welcome to the March edition of the College newsletter for 2025.
Now that our undergraduate students are back, it feels like the year has really started in earnest!
Our lead story this month is by Dr Katherine McLachlan, TPD of Criminology, where she shares her reflections on the Criminology community, in Flinders and beyond Flinders. Join Katherine in welcoming three new members of our Criminology team!
Our lead photograph shows Associate Professor Rob Manwaring speaking to a group of students at Gadjah Mada University in Indonesia. Rob’s visit was an important contribution towards one of BGL’s key strategic choices for 2025: to focus our international engagement in education and research through attention to key countries, regions and institutions.
Our March edition also includes two PhD completions in CSI, a visiting Fulbright scholar in JBC, and five new articles in top journals.

Intifar's Global Youth Initiative
Intifar Chowdhury had the honour of representing Australia and Flinders University in Brussels as one of 12 young researchers selected for the Young Researchers’ Network (YRN), a three-year EU-backed initiative under the European Democracy Hub and WYDE Civic Engagement project.
The first meeting brought together scholars, policymakers, and think tanks to explore youth civic and political participation. Intifar’s research focuses on political generations in Australia and global youth (dis)engagement.

Jeff Bleich Centre
Exciting news from the Jeff Bleich Centre. This semester, we are privileged to host Professor Aaron Fellmeth, the 2025 Fulbright Don DeBats Distinguished Chair in Politics and Public Policy. A renowned expert in international law, Professor Fellmeth brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from his work in public international law, intellectual property, and international business transactions.
Centre for Social Impact
This month, we celebrate the achievements of two recent PhD completions, supervised by CSI Members—Dr Sahar Faghidno and Dr Winnie Agnew-Pauley—whose research addresses critical issues in food security and policing. We also highlight key events, including the annual CSI Writing Retreat, the launch of a report which explores the use of AI in rental markets, and the upcoming Social Prescribing Day. Plus, we celebrate the 2025 Social Impact Scholarship recipients.

A Big Thank You to Marja van Breda!
Adela and Stacey would like to say a big ‘Thank you’ to Marja van Breda, whose last day in the College as a Research Support Assistant was Friday 28th February. Marja has been an integral part of the Research Support Team since the College inception in 2017, providing helpful support to College researchers, HDRs and the Dean Research. Marja has made a significant contribution to the College, and we sincerely thank her for all her hard work and dedication over the years.
Marja will be continuing to work part-time in CEPSW, so she will still be on campus, and we wish her all the very best for the future

Flinders University and Bupa invite you to have a free 5-minute health check on a SiSU Health Station
SiSU Health Stations give you personalised health metrics which allows you to understand, monitor and act on improving your health. The Station is medically certified device that provides simple, accurate and convenient health information. Drop in and take a free five-minute assessment at your convenience.
The SiSU Health Station check includes:
- Biometrics: blood pressure, body fat %, height/weight
- Health risks: QRISK3, Heart Age, Type 2 diabetes risk
- Stress and lifestyle: mental and emotional health, and
- Lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol nutrition and activity)
The Health Measure Station will be available for drop in health checks for the month of March:

Reach Out's Laps for Life
New staff member Tammy Coleman-Zweck is participating in Reach Out’s Laps for Life to raise funds for youth mental health in the month of March.
This is Tammy’s second year, and she is hoping to swim 10 kilometres and raise $520. With the generosity of staff, she would join Thorpey’s Heroes VIP Club and raise $1,000.
If this generous target is reached Tammy will swim 20 kilometres by 31 March, 2025. Donations over $2 are tax deductable and you can choose your own amount by clicking on the button below.

This is your opportunity to have a one-on-one chat with a senior librarian from the Research Engagement team, right within your College.
