FUNDING CALL

Teaching & Learning Research Initiative (TLRI): Nāu i Whatu te Kākahu, he Tāniko Tāku Research Grant

About the Scheme

The TLRI seeks to support research addressing themes of strategic importance to education in New Zealand that will lead to an improvement in outcomes for learners. Partnerships between researchers and practitioners are central to the TLRI.

    Key Things to Note

    New in 2022

The TLRI is introducing a new opportunity for researchers submitting proposals that focus on supporting success for Pacific learners. Applicants submitting Pacific-focused proposals to the TLRI’s Open pathway can now chose to have their applications assessed against a new set of Pacific criteria. You can read more about this opportunity in the TLRI Expression of Interest 2022 Guidance document.

Changes to the Whatua Tū Aka application process

Researchers can now apply to Whatua Tū Aka at either the Expression of Interest or the Full Proposal stage. Whatua Tū Aka applicants who submit an Expression of Interest application will receive panel feedback but there is no longer a shortlisting process at this stage. To be considered for funding, Whatua Tū Aka applicants must submit a Full Proposal. You can read more about this new opportunity in the TLRI Expression of Interest 2022 Guidance document.

    There are two pathways:

    1. Open pathway: Open to proposals from all contexts and settings that meet the criteria.
    2. Whatua tū aka: Projects that meet the criterial for kaupapa Māori project.

    Priority:

This year the TLRI fund is prioritising the following areas:

    • Research on topics of strategic importance within the early childhood education (ECE) and/or compulsory school sectors.
    • Research that supports success for Māori learners as Māori in any sector.
    • Research that supports success for Pacific learners in any sector.

    Grant Value & Duration:

    • Project duration: 1,2 or 3 years.
    • Funding: Max $150,000 per year (appropriate for scale and scope of proposed project) with a maximum of $450,000 across the life of the project (excl. GST).

    Eligibility:

    • Proposals need to come from partnerships involving education practitioners and researchers.
    • Postgraduate students can be on project teams, but the TLRI cannot directly fund PhD or Master’s study.
    • Projects that are “business as usual” e.g., evaluating course changes at an institution, without demonstrating wider strategic and practice value, do not fit the intent of the TLRI.

    INTERNAL DEADLINE

    • EOI: 5pm, Thursday 21 April 2022.
    • Full Proposal: 5pm, Tuesday 16 August 2022.
