May eNews: Artwork unveiled, resources released, plus information on an opportunity to exhibit art

First of all, we would like to acknowledge that it is National Reconciliation Week. Reconciliation is essential to achieving mentally healthy people and communities, so we encourage you to engage in events occuring this week, learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The visual identity for Queensland Mental Health Week (QMHW) 2022 has been developed using the artwork ‘Stronger connection creates strong health' by proud Mayi woman Leah Cummins. The painting is Leah’s interpretation of the theme ‘Awareness, Belonging, Connection’ and tells a story of connecting to a healthier life, “back to the ways of our ancestors”, and the important role country and community play in people’s social and emotional wellbeing.

You can download the official 2022 posters featuring this artwork now! There are a range of other resources also available on the QMHW website as part of a first wave release. More items, including school resources, will be made available in July.

We are also pleased to share that Richmond Fellowship Queensland (RFQ) have opened applications for the 2022 Recovered Futures Art Exhibition. Below is more information on the Exhibition and an artist story well worth reading.

Also below are news snippets from the sector and information on some of our partners (please get in touch if you're interested in becoming a sponsor).

We hope you enjoy reading this edition!

Calling all artists!

Applications for the 2022 Recovered Futures Art Exhibition are now open! A mainstay on the Brisbane art calendar, the exhibition showcases the talents of artists with a lived experience of mental illness while raising awareness of mental health, recovery and wellbeing. Curated by Mandana Mapar, the event is a major feature of QMHW and a celebrated exhibition in its own right.

Artists with a lived experience of mental illness (either personal experience, or as a carer or family member) are invited to complete an application by Sunday 26 June 2022.

Artist story: A must-read

Dean Crozier has been creating art for years, but only found the courage to exhibit at the Recovered Futures Art Exhibition in 2021. It was a leap of faith that would pay off in dividends.

“The subject matter of this exhibition was attractive, as a lot of my work deals with mental health issues. To even have my pieces displayed was a big deal, as you’re really putting yourself and your story out there. To see those two red dots was even better! I like what I do, and to have someone completely objective say that they also like my work, well, that does bolster your self-esteem.”
