Newsletter 9 - June 27, 2025

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

Reporting to Parents
The School Curriculum and Standards Authority requires all schools to implement the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline (the Outline) at www.scsa.wa.edu.au to meet the learning needs of all students.

The Outline sets out the mandated knowledge, understandings, skills, values and attitudes that Pre-primary to Year 10 students are expected to acquire in the eight learning areas, expected standards of achievement, and requirements for reporting on student achievement.

Mid-year reporting: The achievement standards articulated in the Outline describe the expected achievement for students who have been taught the curriculum content for the full year of schooling. Therefore, in mid-year reports, teachers make a professional judgment regarding the level of achievement that the student is demonstrating relative to the achievement standard, taking into account the curriculum that has been taught and assessed to that point in time. Thus, students demonstrating excellent achievement at that point in time are allocated an ‘A’ grade or ‘Excellent’ achievement, and students demonstrating satisfactory achievement are allocated a ‘C’ grade or ‘Satisfactory’ achievement.

Throughout each semester teachers provide timely and relevant written and verbal feedback to students and modify teaching through formative assessment (assessment for learning). Teachers make an on-balanced judgement at the end of a learning period (eg: each semester) as to what level has been achieved based on a range of assessments (assessment of learning).

Subiaco PS Semester 1 Formal Reports will be shared with all parents via Compass on Tuesday 1 July 2025 at 4.00pm.
This is an opportunity to celebrate your child, their hard work, effort and attitude. Achievement is individual and relates to not only academic outcomes, but independence, co-operation, kindness and progress.

School Development Day Term 3 Monday 21 July
This is a reminder that the first Monday of Term 3, is a pupil free day.
School Development Days are used to build on the knowledge and skills of our teachers, school leaders and support staff, through targeted professional learning aligned to Subiaco PS strategic directions and the Department of Education priorities.
Students do not attend school on school development days.

Thank you
As we wrap up an incredibly busy and rewarding Term 2, I’ve reflected on all that we’ve achieved together as a school community. This term has been full of energy, learning, and memorable experiences for our students. From the Public School Review to swimming lessons, running club, a variety of excursions and incursions, and vibrant school photos, we’ve certainly made the most of every opportunity!

We celebrated special moments like Mother's Day, participated in Walk to School Day, and proudly hosted assemblies and major sporting events including the Faction Cross Country, Interschool Cross Country, and the Winter Carnival. Our students also showed great spirit supporting the Telethon fundraiser and being part of the Channel 7 filming, a proud moment for all!

We’ve continued important learning through Foodbank WA, YSafe sessions and embraced the richness of culture and connection in upcoming NAIDOC Week. On the governance side, our School Board engaged in valuable training to keep driving our school forward.

We have also managed the ceiling collapse in the U1 Year 5 classroom, and I’m incredibly proud of the resilience shown by our students and the support from staff in adapting so quickly. The relocation to the library was no small feat, and everyone handled it with flexibility and care.

A heartfelt thank you goes to our incredible front office team for keeping everything running smoothly, and to all our dedicated staff who go above and beyond every day.

A very special best wishes and lots of love to Kim Cardillo, our Manager Corporate Services, as she heads off on maternity leave – we will miss you dearly and wish you all the best for this exciting new chapter!

Wishing all our families a safe, relaxing and joyful holiday break. Enjoy this time together and we look forward to seeing everyone back refreshed for Term 3.

Warm regards,
Heather McNeil

Instructional Coaching Roadshow with Dr Jim Knight

Last week, Ms McNeil and I had the privilege of attending the Instructional Coaching Done Well Roadshow, two powerful days of learning with Dr Jim Knight, a world-renowned expert and leader in instructional coaching.

This was an inspiring and practical workshop. Here's a snapshot of what we took away:

  • A deep dive into the 7 success factors of effective instructional coaching
  •  A clear, practical framework for building sustainable coaching programs
  • Tools and supports to help instructional coaches in their roles
  • Insightful strategies for how school leaders can better support coaches to improve outcomes for students
  • Reinforcement of the importance of honouring teachers as professionals and creating safe, supportive environments where coaching can thrive.

As Subiaco continues on its Teaching for Impact journey, this will become a core component that encourages and promotes staff growth, supports wellbeing, and ultimately improves the outcomes for our students.

2025 SRC (Student Representative Council)

Hello, we are the Student Representative Council (SRC) for 2025. Each year students from Years 4,5 and 6 are given the opportunity to express their interest in running for the SRC. One student from each class is elected by their classmates and teachers. In total there are 11 hardworking members of the SRC this year. In the SRC we listen to suggestions from all students about improvements they would like to see around the school. We strive to take all ideas into account and discuss them in our meetings. We try our best to be role models to all students and take pride in being part of the Subiaco school community.

Last year Subiaco Primary School designed and created a school mascot. Students were allowed to submit their mascot designs, and the 2024 SRC members selected a couple for the students to vote on. Once we got our winning design, our mascot was created by Miss Hayley. This year, we are planning on how the mascot can be used around the school. Some ideas from the students so far are taking our mascot to sport carnivals such as, cross-country, winter carnival, and interschool or giving the mascot to classes as a class reward.

We have chosen the acronym P.R.I.D.E to match our mascot and assist us in developing school values to match our school motto ‘Our Best’. The students have been voting on words to go with the acronym, and we will share the results when all votes have been collected.

Last year bike racks were brought up with the SRC. We are still looking into getting more racks located around the school. We are currently discussing budget and location. We would love to place some bike racks closer to the oval. We are looking into options for financial support.

As you might already know Subiaco Primary School is making a sensory room. This amazing area will provide a safe and quiet space for students. We are currently planning a design for the space and look forward to sharing it with the rest of the school.
Last year, many students requested more handball courts. We have been thinking of painting new courts near the library, in the undercover area or around the new play space near the M block. The courts take several days to dry, so we need good weather and low foot traffic. We can hopefully paint these soon.

We are open to any suggestions or questions, so please come and speak with us any time.

Thank you from the 2025 SRC.

French Club Update

This term, our Year 4 students explored the vibrant culture and geography of France through French Club. From learning about Brittany and famous French castles to discovering the Carnivals of Dunkerque, Fashion Week, and the diverse French landscapes, students immersed themselves in engaging activities. Highlights included designing postcards and tote bags, staging a fashion show, building castles, crafting carnival masks, and playing the classic French game Loup-Garou.
