Guild Newsletter No images? Click here ![]() Principal's updateAs the first half of the term draws to a close, we are beginning to enjoy longer days and the beauty of the natural world in springtime. The change in the weather has allowed us to recommence outdoor activities in earnest; the biggest event so far being the walk and talk workshop ‘A window on Lindow’. Many thanks to Phil Barton for the exhibition of his artwork at the Guild as well as his co-contributors John Handley and Anna Riordan for facilitating the learning walk to Lindow Moss and workshop at the Guild. The community café provision has continued to develop and we are grateful for your patronage. We are very proud of what our adult’s with learning disabilities have achieved. All on them have now successfully completed their training and been awarded an entry-level food hygiene certificate. If you would like to visit us during half-term, the café will be open from 10.00am to 3.00pm Monday to Friday. We are currently compiling our programme of courses and other activities which will commence this autumn; if you are a qualified teacher and would like to teach or you are an enthusiast and would like to start a club, please contact Ali Woodburn with your ideas. charitysupport@guildlifelonglearning.org With best wishes for the half-term break, Paula Riordan Principal ![]() We are so proud of Cara, one of Hannah’s students for winning January’s Kernowcraft competition challenge. The jewellery piece had to include garnet as its Januarys birthstone. Cara’s gothic silver and garnet cross was a Christmas gift for her beautiful daughter. She looks stunning sporting her gorgeous handmade gift. You can check out Cara’s work on Insta and Facebook at “Arty Jeweller”. What a lavish, eye-catching design with so many components and techniques. "My daughter had been admiring the ornate gothic style crosses in jewellery shops on the island of Santorini. So, I decided to make her one, not having any experience of setting marquise garnet stones or barely any stone setting experience. It was a total headache as isn't perfect by a long shot, but she loves it and that's all that matters. I learned so much and really got to appreciate the beauty of the stones." Partnership Working with the Rossendale Trust "It is a real pleasure to watch Lisa's progression in her WorkTaste placement. She has completed the majority of her level 1 Food Hygiene Certificate and as part of her learning and development is now doing practical tasks in the kitchen. Yesterday she prepared Paula's lunch. Fantastic work Lisa and good luck with the rest of your training." The team at Rossendale Youth Theatre WorkshopCome along to our exciting youth workshops, a stimulating group for young people. We'll start with warm-up games and exercises, before getting into improvisation scenes. Throughout the workshops you will be learning the techniques of acting and much more! Delivered by accomplished amateur theatre directors, Anja Schiebeck and Matt Smith. Phil Barton's Exhibition" A Window on Lindow"Such wonderful feedback‘Fabulous interpretation, mixing science and art and history ‘etc. Loved the fact so many different techniques [were] used to portray the info. You need to think of creating prints.’ ‘Thank you so much for showing your work, Phil. It’s aesthetically very pleasing as well as historically and emotionally fascinating. I struggled a bit with so much text as I really wanted to appreciate the visuals, but I can see their relevance – I’m buying a catalogue to let it all sink in. One of the very best bits for me is that everything as bits of the Moss incorporated in it.’ ‘ A unique and interesting exhibition . The concept is very modern, fresh and distinctive" ‘Really interesting interpretations. I liked the links with modern painters (Klee, Mondrian). Art Appreciation Society talk at the Guild. Monday 27 February 2023 10-12 Simeon Solomon – A Jewish Tragedy - the forgotten Pre-Raphaelite on the margins of Extinction An illustrated talk by Frank Vigon All welcome to come along. This is an illustrated talk on the life and works of the artist Simeon Solomon. He is acknowledged as one of the main members of the Pre-Raphaelite group as well as being a major Aesthetic and Symbolist artist. In 1873 he was involved in a homosexual scandal that led to his social isolation and exclusion from polite society. He becomes an alcoholic, still painting and drawing but spending the rest of his life down and out, sometimes resident in St. Giles workhouse where he eventually dies in 1905. He has been marginalised in Art History almost to a level of non-existence. In Jewish circles he is most famous for his painting of the young Rabbi carrying the scrolls now in the Whitworth Art Gallery. This talk is part of a campaign to re-establish his reputation as one of the most influential and important artists of the 19th Century.
