Newsletter 4 - March 17, 2023

From the Principal

Harmony Week is a very important event on our Subiaco Primary Schoo calendarl. Our diverse community of learners is our strength! We are privileged to have over 47% of our students who speak more than one language and families from over 50 different countries, creating the rich tapestry of our Subiaco Primary School community.

On Wednesday 22 March, all students are encouraged to celebrate by wearing colourful clothes, clothing appropriate to their country of origin or parent’s origin or the colour orange, which represents harmony.

The theme of Harmony Week 2023 is Everyone Belongs. The aim is to highlight the importance of respect, inclusiveness and belonging in multicultural Australia. When we learn to understand and appreciate diverse cultures, beliefs and journeys, we help to build a caring and cohesive community. A sense of belonging is an important part of health and wellbeing.

Classes will offer different opportunities for children to share aspects of their culture. Class teachers will communicate their class activities through COMPASS.

International Women’s Day 2023
How uplifting it was to be able to catch up with amazing Subiaco Primary School women on International Women’s Day.

A big thanks to Teresa Pimm for coordinating this event. I would also like to acknowledge the amazing women that work and teach at Subiaco Primary School. Teaching is a wonderful, complex and demanding occupation. These committed women have their own families and life commitments, and they ensure that their students are at the centre of their decisions and priorities each and every day.

Junior Faction Swimming and Splash Carnival
On Thursday, 15 March we held our Junior Faction Swimming and Splash Carnival. This is one of the biggest days on the calendar for our Year 1-3 students in our fabulous school pool. Our aim for this day, is to provide a fun and safe environment for all the students, with a mix of independence and support from teachers and our fabulous Year 6 leaders.

This exciting day consisted of swimming races and games that our students love, such as Ball Pursuit, Duck Rescue, Sponge Fun and the Duck Wash.

A big thanks to Mr Clancy, ably supported by Mr Egan for the lead up and the organisation of the day that ensured everyone had a fantastic time. Click HERE for photos.

Special thanks to the many families who donated food to the Food & Healthy Hub Stall on the Junior Carnival Day.  Historically, this stall had always been very successful and this year continued the tradition.

Thank you to all those parents who supported the day behind the scenes and helping out on the stalls. A massive call out to the Healthy Hub volunteers and our Year 2 parent volunteers who helped make the day a big success.

We look forward to next Tuesday 21 March, when the exciting and jam-packed senior carnival will be held at Claremont Pool!

Keep safe everyone,

Dr Melinda Harris
Principal

NAPLAN 2023

All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in Australia do NAPLAN tests in March each year. The results help indicate which schools are doing well and which schools might need extra support. On Wednesday, NAPLAN commenced for Yr 3 and 5. The students have been working towards these tests as part of the teaching and learning program.

Thank you to all the teachers involved and special thanks to Mr Hayward, Mrs Foster and Ms Dumpleton in the library to ensure that the technology was supported. We have been a 1:1 BYOD school for 10 years and this is of great benefit during NAPLAN for a host of reasons.

Year 4 Excursion Burt Law Courts

The Year Four classes went to the Burt Law Courts this week to apply what they have been learning in Civics and Citizenship. The children participated in two activities. One being a role play from "Alice in Wonderland" where the children had to decide if Alice was guilty or not of being a public nuisance when she disagreed with the Queen of Hearts, after she announced she had won the game. In the second activity, the children visited a Civil Court in the Supreme Court Building to discuss the difference between rules and laws. Please click HERE for some photos from the excursion.

Pre-primary Excursion - Australia Reads

The Pre-primary classes visited the Subiaco Library to participate in the Australia Reads event. We had a wonderful experience singing songs, listening to stories from the fantastic library staff and hearing about the writing process from author Craig Silvey. The students absolutely loved it- we shared our favourite books and have started writing postcards to give back to the library. Thank you to the Year 5 students who came along with us as buddies, you were fantastic!

When we came back to school, we made connections between the author's process and how we have started the very same process in creating our own classroom version of a Talk For Writing text. Just like Craig, we were inspired to create our very own version of a Talk For Writing book on owls, through imagining our own character ‘Millie’. Click HERE for photos.

Pre-primary Incursion - Ballerina Bunny

This Tuesday the Pre-primary classes enjoyed a delightful, interactive storytelling and musical experience with Rebecca Jane Flanagan, performing as Ballerina Bunny.

The story was engaging with music, singing and dancing as well as props including bunnies, bridges, gardens, colourful eggs and scarves.

The children had so much fun! We discovered that this year an Easter Bilby might visit our gardens! ‘Ballerina Bunny’ was also a great introduction and motivation for our up and coming Easter Celebration activities.

A lovely morning of creative story telling was enjoyed by all. Click HERE to view the children in action.

Swimming Carnival Food & Healthy Hub Stalls

Thanks to everyone who helped make the Swimming Carnival Food and Healthy Hub 'Cool Fuel' stalls such a great success last week! Both stalls were as popular as ever with the kids, and the food stall raised over $1,700.

Thanks to our amazing Year 2 parent volunteers who organised and ran the stalls, as well as all the parents who donated so many delicious treats.

Also, a big call out to The People's Produce for their generous support in donating the fruit & veg for the 'Cool Fuel' stall - www.thepeoplesproduce.com.au/

Urgently seeking P&C Committee volunteers!

Celebrating Harmony Week

From the School Psychologist
This year, Harmony Week will be celebrated from 20 to 26 March. The aim of this special event is to highlight the importance of respect, inclusiveness and belonging in multicultural Australia.

Harmony Week always includes the 21st March, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. When we learn to understand and appreciate diverse cultures, beliefs and journeys, we help to build a caring and cohesive community. A sense of belonging, strong relationships and face-to-face connections are key ingredients for good mental health and wellbeing. The theme for Harmony Week 2023 is Everyone belongs.

School TV Special Report
Harmony Week is a celebration held annually in March across Australia. This event is an excellent opportunity for parents to teach their children about different cultures, traditions and customs. The goal is to encourage everyone to appreciate and celebrate differences and promote a sense of community and belonging for everyone.

During Harmony Week, there are a number of events and activities held to bring people from different cultures together. These activities include multicultural food festivals, cultural performances, art exhibitions and workshops. Participating in these events helps children to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the diverse communities that make up Australia.

As a parent, you can engage your children in discussions about multiculturalism and encouraging them to ask questions. Promoting a more harmonious and inclusive society, can help children grow up with a greater appreciation for the richness and diversity of Australia's cultural landscape.

This Special Report hopes to instil positive values and create an opportunity to start a conversation with your child about understanding diversity and multiculturalism. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please consider seeking medical or professional help.

Reminders

School Car Parks - Staff Parking Only
We request that parents please respect and abide by the rules regarding the staff carparks at the front of the school and on Hamersley Road, outside LP1. We ask that parents please drop their children off at the parking bays on Bagot or Hamersley Roads. Thank you for your consideration.

Entry To Halls & Classrooms
We remind parents that no one is permitted in the school halls or classrooms prior to 8.30am (unless specifically arranged by the teacher). Furthermore parents are not permitted to wait inside the halls prior to the 3.10pm bell. It is important that teachers have time to prepare for your child’s day and that your child benefits from a full day of school. We seek your cooperation and respect for this school rule.

Kindergarten parents can access the passageway to their classrooms via the gate into the Kindergarten playground. Please do not enter via the school office or lower hall. If you have older children to collect, we ask that you wait outside until the final bell.

Headlice
Please check your children’s hair regularly for head lice and treat as required.

Birthday Celebrations
If your child’s birthday falls on a school day and you would like bring in a treat for the class please consider healthy, nut free alternatives as we have students with serious allergies. Commercially bought, individual cup cakes are acceptable but due to our healthy eating policy we would rather parents not provide chocolates or lollies.

Student Absences – Enter An Attendance Note On Compass
A parent explanation is required for all student absences. Please enter this on Compass. Parent reminders will be emailed to parents every Monday for any unexplained absences.
