Spotlight On Our People

Gordon Li

Gordon Li

Graduate Student, Applied Physics and Materials Science

Hello everyone, I’m a third-year PhD Candidate in Applied Physics. I’m originally from Australia and graduated from the University of Sydney with a BSc (Hons) in Physics before arriving at Caltech in June 2021 to join the group of Alireza Marandi. My research is in the field of optics and photonics (the study of light) and focuses on developing next-generation computers that process information using light rather than electricity. By harnessing ultrafast nonlinear optical processes, we can achieve thousands of times faster computational clock rates and latencies compared to existing digital electronic computers. I’m grateful to be a recipient of the inaugural Quad Fellowship, which is a first-of-its-kind scholarship program initiated by the governments of Australia, India, Japan, and the United States. Currently, I also serve as President of the Caltech Optica Student Chapter. My hobbies include swimming (but only in 50m pools!), cooking Cantonese food, calisthenics, and watching anime.

Undergraduate Student, Electrical Engineering

I’m a fourth-year undergraduate student majoring in Electrical Engineering. In addition to playing for the women’s basketball team, I’ve been heavily involved with projects and clubs. Within the Caltech Air and Outer Space (CAOS) club, I’m the Co-founder and Electrical Lead for the Caltech Rover Autonomy, Technology, and Exploration Research (CRATER) project. Our goal is to develop a rover testbed that is fully equipped with a robotic arm, autonomous navigation capabilities, remote control up to 2km, and a robust chassis to traverse extreme terrain. Throughout the beginning of this project, most of the Electrical subteam’s responsibility has been the power distribution system in the rover. This experience has coupled nicely with my internship on the Power Design Services (Automotive) team at Texas Instruments, so I’m excited to take advantage of this coincidence and continue exploring power electronics. My advice to underclassmen who aren’t sure about their career right now: go along with whatever intriguing opportunities open up for you, even if it’s not quite what you imagined yourself doing—it might lead you closer to your dream than you think.

We'd like to feature you!

2024 KISS Affiliates Call

The Keck Institute for Space Studies (KISS) is soliciting nominations for KISS Affiliates who will be welcomed into the cohort in January 2024. Nominated by the Caltech faculty, KISS Affiliates are an ongoing cohort of Campus graduate students and postdocs who are seen as the next generation of space exploration leaders. They form a cross-divisional cohort and will participate in monthly events with space leaders at NASA, industry, and academia and a program of professional development. Nominations due November 3, 2023. Learn more.

2024 KISS Study Programs Call

The Keck Institute for Space Studies (KISS) is soliciting concepts for Study Programs to be carried out during the 2024 calendar year. Concepts are solicited in the areas of space engineering, planetary science, remote sensing and earth system science, astrobiology, observational astronomy and physics from space. Proposal Concepts Due (Required; 2-pages): November 3, 2023. Proposals Due (5-pages+appendices): December 20, 2023. Learn more.

RSI Ideation Grants - Call for Proposals

These grants are intended to fund scientists and engineers interested in translating their ideas and technologies into wider world impact, and potentially creating new ventures. These grants serve the Resnick Sustainability Institute's mission to advance global sustainability by addressing challenges and opportunities associated with climate change and the stewardship of natural resources. Ideation funding supports conceptualizing technology development, from early idea to kickstarting a business. Expenditure categories include; techno-economic/carbon lifecycle analysis; shared workspace & tech facility fees; industry visits & conferences; small equipment, materials & supplies; and business information. Rolling applications accepted through December 31, 2023. Learn more and apply.

2024 RSI Pioneer Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Resnick Sustainability Institute's (RSI) Pioneer Postdoctoral Fellowship recruits outstanding recent PhD graduates to pursue research and training in exciting areas relevant to sustainability at Caltech. This fellowship will afford researchers access to cutting edge facilities, training, and broad expertise in the science and engineering needed to tackle pressing challenges in sustainability. RSI anticipates making up to 3 awards and welcomes applicants with exceptional backgrounds in research and who are committed to diversity and creating an inclusive, equitable culture. Candidates must secure a commitment from one or more Caltech faculty members to serve as a mentor and to provide office/lab space for the fellowship. Mentors will be expected to provide a 50% cost-share for the fellowship. Application deadline: Friday, January 12, 2024. Learn more and apply.
