What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - April

We want your ideas! The Central Otago District Arts Trust and Welcoming Communities are working on a mural project for the Cromwell and wider Central Otago community. This is set to be completed in May 2023. For the next two weeks of April we are looking for your ideas to help inform the content of the art work. Quite some time ago, professional street artist Matt/ Ling contacted the Central Otago District Arts Trust to express his interest
in creating a mural in Central Otago. Matt/ Ling is a Melbourne based artist, founding member of The Safehouse Studio and currently working from the renowned Everfresh Studio in Australia. He has been adding colour and vibrancy to his environment since 2000. Known for producing large-scale installations, Ling looks to combine the aesthetics of traditional graffiti with an impressionistic approach to painting. Utilising heavy brush strokes, textures and a deft touch with aerosols, resulting in bold designs with the consideration of studio work and an immediacy synonymous with graffiti. We are very lucky to have him coming to Central Otago and look forward to his arrival very soon! In March 2022, Welcoming Communities conducted a newcomer survey in order to gather feedback about the experience of newcomers in Central Otago. When participants were asked how our public spaces could better reflect diversity, and create a sense of community ownership, there was a wide range of responses - including artwork depicting the historical role of different cultures in the community. Consultation with the Central Otago District Arts Trust (CODAT) commenced to receive advice around how this could happen. After many discussions the Cromwell Football Club building at the Alpha Street reserve was identified as an ideal canvas for the mural. Both the Cromwell Junior and Senior Football Clubs enjoy a culturally diverse group of members who all contribute to the Central Otago community. Celebrating the diversity of both the sport and the
community through this art project seemed a natural choice and engaging Matt to tackle this task was an obvious scenario. The mural will depict the cultural diversity of the Cromwell community in 2023, and celebrate the uniting force of sport (in keeping with the Alpha Reserve Pavilion site). The image will include a series of 6- 8 portraits of people who represent this concept. We have already gathered some ideas from the Cromwell community and will continue to receive suggestions until half-way through April. Your ideas and input are welcomed. You can submit these by visiting The Cromwell Multicultural Mural Project
Facebook page or emailing [email protected] We look forward to hearing from you! Easter is
a busy time for the arts in Central Otago. Scroll down to enjoy the multitude of exhibitions, films, markets and events over this long weekend.
