College hosts industry partners & alumni
On the evening of Thursday 24 August, the College played host to Flinders alumni and industry leaders who have supported the College and its programs. It was an incredible evening. The energy in the room was fantastic with guests seizing the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, exchange ideas, and establish new relationships. Awesome Pawsome raises $1,842 for RSPCA
Helping to create a 'sticky' campus, bakers from across the College (including EPSW) answered our call and baked up a storm to contribute sweet and savoury delights to sell. We even had Dog Biscuits for pampered pooches, lovingly made by Sam. We also ramped up our efforts with a Tap ‘n Go machine and QR code linked directly to our fundraising page. The RSPCA SA visited us with a beautiful Samoyed/Golden Retriever cross rescue dog, King. Seized as a puppy with his mum and siblings from a backyard breeder, he’s now living his best life and lapped up all the attention he received from
people. Susannah brought in Cooper, her gorgeous, gentle Groodle, Kerry-Anne (coffee shop) brought in rescue dog Pablo (chihuahua mix) and a mystery black Spoodle visited as well. We are incredibly pleased to announce that we raised $1,842.80, beating last year’s RSPCA Cupcake Day fundraiser by $13.05. Renee, Sam and Trish would like to thank everyone who baked, donated and ate their way through all the goodies on the table. Of course, charity calories are free calories and
they don’t count 😉
BGL is activating Tonsley campus in October too!
In mid-October staff and students will be invited to the Tonsley campus, forming one of the other 14 successful campus activation proposals being held across Flinders University campuses. Attendees will learn about space and caring for our planet through a diverse lens of Science, Business and Indigenous culture. You can enjoy lunch, join tours at Tonsley and test your creativity working
in a team to tackle a global issue. The event allows you to meet new people, expand your network and test your luck to win a prize. Well done to the organisers: Dr Shervin Shokri, Associate Professor Angie Shafei, and Dr Afshin Tanouri. Watch this space!
Professional Staff Spotlight:
Dr Shervin Shokri
Initially driven to be a scientist, now Shervin is a MBA mentor, International Student Advisor, and is completing the Flinders MBA. She's also leading the delivery of a campus space activation set for Tonsley in October.

Clarifying the Research Teaching Nexus
By Professor Adela McMurray Dean (Research) & Professor Christopher Kee Dean (Education)The teaching-research nexus refers to the mutually beneficial relationship between teaching and research in higher education. It recognises the interconnectedness and synergy between these two core activities of academia. The teaching-research nexus suggests that teaching and research are not separate and isolated endeavours but rather inform and enrich each other.

Improving climate resilience for Australian farmers As climate change continues to impact, Australian farmers and regional communities need investment into drought preparedness. Professor Roberta Crouch, Professor Paul Arbon and Dr Naser Pourazad and a Flinders University consortium were successful in their application to complete a Future Drought Fund project to the value of $8 million, with $1.12 million awarded to the BGL team. The goal of the grant is to undertake long-term trials of new and emerging agriculture practices around cropping, grazing and
mixed farming, to help farmers be more drought-resilient. Paul, Roberta and Naser are involved in the human side of these activities, including trade-off/acceptance of innovations and adoptions, and how all these activities contribute to resilience. This $8 million Future Drought Fund grant was the largest of six successful applications with funding over five years, as announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Senator Murray Watt in August 2023.

High Technology. Acting Director Associate Professor Rodrigo Praino of the Jeff Bleich Centre says, "we are excited to organise in Australia a dedicated forum for discussions on space and cyber, as it has happened overseas for several years now, especially in the USA and Europe. Hear from Leanne Liddle, pre-referendum Aboriginal children are born in poorer health, face lives marred by chronic illness, and can expect to live around eight years less than the general Australian population. At the same time, they are 10 times more likely to be imprisoned than non-Aboriginal Australians. They are also more likely to come in contact with the criminal justice system, both as an offender and a
victim. Whatever should transpire after the referendum later this year, it’s time for greater accountability to ensure that the policies, programs and initiatives targeting Aboriginal Australia achieve and deliver what they are intended to do — improve and transform lives.
