April 24, 2026 Introducing Dr. Tammy Kindel, Chief of the Division of Research
Dr. Tammy Kindel joined MCW in 2015 after completing a fellowship in minimally invasive gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. She grew up in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of a United States Air Force fighter pilot and has been an avid lifelong soccer player. She attended Wilmington College, where she studied biology and minored in chemistry, religion, and philosophy. There, she was recognized as a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American and named Ohio’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Woman of the Year. She went on to medical school at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, where she first became involved in research in a basic science nephrology laboratory. Dr. Kindel completed her general surgery residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital/Feinberg School of Medicine and earned a PhD during her research years in pathobiology and molecular medicine at the University of Cincinnati. Her studies involved exploring mechanisms for diabetes remission after bypass procedures independent of weight loss related to gastrointestinal hormone signaling, including GLP-1 and GIP. These studies were the first to find a direct causation between GLP-1 receptor signaling and hyperglycemia improvement after bariatric surgery in an animal model. Her current NIH/NHLBI-funded research focuses on metabolic mechanisms of disease remission after sleeve gastrectomy related to the gut microbiome and enterohepatic circulation. At Froedtert Hospital, Dr. Kindel directs the MBSAQIP-accredited bariatric surgery program. She has led program growth in revisional metabolic surgery, advanced heart failure, pathway standardization to optimize patient outcomes, and accreditation of their program to provide adolescent bariatric surgical care and associated state advocacy efforts related to pediatric metabolic surgery. She is an active member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, serving on the board of directors and is a member of the Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Committee and Research Committee. At MCW, she is the chair of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and leads the Leadership Learning Collaborative, a 10-month leadership development program for faculty and staff at MCW housed within AWSM. Outside of work, Dr. Kindel enjoys trying new restaurants, OrangeTheory Fitness, traveling, and live music. She also enjoys time with her three sons, Jonah and twins Davis and Devin. She lives in Brookfield with her family and their pets - a cat, Lucy and a dog, Sherman. Award AnnouncementsCongratulations!

Calling all research faculty and staff: Share your feedback on the Office of ResearchThe Office of Research invites employees active in the research mission to take their Stakeholder Feedback Survey. The survey is aligned with the department’s FY26 goal to identify opportunities to enhance the experiences of our stakeholders. The Office of Research conducted a similar survey in FY23 and will analyze these results over time to identify current and future areas of impact. The survey is anonymous and will be available April 13-May 4.For survey inquiries, please reach out to AshLeigh Sanchez.SurPASS Tip of the Month Current and Pending Other Support (CPOS) Like the new SciENCV biosketch, the NIH has re-branded the Other Support. It is now called “Current and Pending Other Support (CPOS)” and is also created in SciENcv. The CPOS form is used for K award grant applications, Just in Time (JIT), Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR), and Prior Approval submissions to the NIH. Applicants should also ensure their ORCID is linked to both their eRA Commons account and SciENcv account to ensure successful completion of the CPOS forms in SciENcv. Clinical Research Tip of the Month Wisconsin All-Payer Claims Data Now Available to MCW Researchers Through a strategic partnership led and funded by AHW, MCW faculty and staff now have institutional access to statewide all-payer healthcare claims data from the Wisconsin Health Information Organization (WHIO) at no charge to them. Researchers can access this new, powerful research tool from the AHW website. This resource covers more than 4 million insured lives across Wisconsin and is hosted within a secure Microsoft Fabric analytics environment built and maintained by AHW in partnership with MCW IS/IT. Few academic medical centers have access to statewide claims data at this scale. AHW has developed data enhancements that link clinical claims to neighborhood-level socioeconomic context and hospital structural data. These capabilities are uniquely available to MCW researchers. AHW has also invested in building the analytic environment, securing data access, and creating onboarding resources to ensure this capability is usable across departments.
