Banks Peninsula storm roading updatesResilient repairs in challenging weather. The current forecast for the weekend predicts rain fall between 25-40mm. We don't expect this level of rainfall to create any issues for the local road network or any of the roading repairs. Please be reassured that we have activated our wet weather plan and council staff and contractors will be on standby to respond if needed. Our contractors have been working hard repairing the road network in several Banks Peninsula Bays. The forecasted rain that began on Wednesday 9 February passed through Banks Peninsula with minor impact on the road network repairs. This was due to the standard of recent repairs, as well as the fast actions of our contractors who attended call outs overnight. Crews were able to spread a significant amount of road metal, a material like gravel that also locks in the road and protects it from heavy vehicles, in the lead up to the rain over February 9-10. This improved the overall safety for residents and strengthened the roads prior to the rain coming through. Rock scaling is now an important part of the repair work to ensure that there are no further slips. Hickory Bay Road was closed over night on Wednesday 9 due to an increased rock fall risk. Over the next few weeks abseiling crews will be working to secure loose rocks above the roads to make the network safe for residents. The weather over the last few weeks has been challenging and will likely impact some of the proposed timeframes initially suggested by our contractor. The road network will need to dry out before the next stages of the repair can begin. Current forecasts predict wet weather for early next week, clearing up by Wednesday. Next week we will provide a full update of the all of the roads and bays mentioned to date complete with updated time frames for repairs.
