Rafael Pérez Evans - Brown Notes

11 July - 03 Oct | Mostyn Gallery | Wales

Brown Notes is a solo exhibition by Spanish-Welsh artist Rafael Pérez Evans, bringing together shattered glass, ready-made sculpture, live plants and sound to explore togetherness and defiance under the pressures of failing care.

The title borrows from the myth of the “brown note”: an infrasound frequency believed to cause involuntary loss of bodily control. In the exhibition, that low, unrelenting vibration gives form to state-induced fear: the acute pressure of depending on systems that are overstretched and withdrawing support.

A talk and Q&A on resistance, feminism and queer history in the Spanish Civil War. Join historian and writer Isabella Lorusso for a fascinating talk on Mujeres Libres, the anarchist feminist movement active during the Spanish Civil War,

including the life of Lucía Sánchez Saornil — poet, activist, co-founder of Mujeres Libres, and one of Spain’s earliest openly lesbian feminist voices.

An evening exploring resistance, memory, feminism, and queer history.

Handbook of Foams by Gerardo Diego

A literary event dedicated to Handbook of Foams, one of the most innovative and evocative works by Spanish poet Gerardo Diego. 

Reading and open debate with poet & translator Francisco Aragón and poets Leo Boix, Marina Sánchez and Soledad Santana as part of the study of Spain’s Generation of ’27.

A constellation of voices through the prism of Gerardo Diego’s image-rich musicality and experimental spirit, shedding light on its place within the Generation of ’27 and its ongoing relevance today. 

Alberto Gracia - La Parra 12

This July do not miss the screening of Alberto Gracia's third feature 'La parra', screening at The Garden Cinema.

A hall of mirrors, Gracia blends the social and the fantastical, in a portray of Ferrol as a spectral place—a kind of ghostly island where nothing seems real, yet everything is rooted in a shared past.

Ion de Sosa's cinematography is a reference in new Spanish cinema, and the music by Jonay Armas create this enigmatic atmosphere that loosely evokes the films of David Lynch.

Concert Misteri D'elx

Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, The Misteri d’Elx, is one of the most singular cultural manifestations of Europe’s intangible heritage.

Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost

Rarely staged, Love’s Labour’s Lost is a raw, refreshingly human comedy that celebrates our desire for connection and dares to leave love unresolved.

Fundación Hispano Británica has announced the second edition of «The Eleanor of Castile, Queen of England Award».

Worth €3,000, the prize aims to promote and recognise the work of journalists, communicators and disseminators in the written media, both in Spain and UK, as it honours their contribution to a better relationship & mutual understanding.

Works must have been published in writing in a Spanish or British medium btw 20 May 2024 - 20 May 2026. Up to 2,000 words. Max 5 works per candidate. 

Las Hijas de Felipe - Live podcast

Las Hijas de Felipe (The Daughters of Philip) is a podcast hosted by hispanists Carmen Urbita and Ana Garriga that dissects the past in order to navigate the chaos of the modern world. Their English debut takes them to ‘Zurbarán’, in an episode that explores the life and art of the Spanish master. Joined by the CEEH Associate Curator of Spanish Paintings & curator of ‘Zurbarán’, Daniel Sobrino Ralston.

Luminara Piano Duo - Echoes of Spain

04 Aug | St Cyprian's, Clarence Gate | London

Luminara Piano Duo plays Mozart & Ravel. Music knows no borders, and the echoes of culture continue to resonate across time and place. And in the early twentieth century, French composer Maurice Ravel found his own unique way of portraying Spain through music. Although born in France, Ravel’s mother came from the Basque region of Spain. Spanish culture, dance rhythms, and folk traditions remained a profound source of inspiration throughout his life and are deeply woven into many of his works.

Supported by the Instituto Cervantes, Classical-D Music artist Luminara Piano Duo appeared in the special concert series Ecos de España (“Echoes of Spain”), celebrating Spanish culture through Ravel’s richly coloured and poetic musical world.

Ángela de la Cruz : Upright

Ikon Gallery presents rarely seen works by acclaimed artist Ángela de la Cruz alongside a new commission developed in collaboration with Birmingham Royal Ballet.

Guest curated by Carolina Grau, the exhibition focuses on De la Cruz’s concern with the human body and the realities of everyday survival. Her sculptural paintings – such as Still Life with Table (2000),  and Bloated III (Blue) (2012), capture the physical dimensions of De la Cruz’s body and emotional relationships between strength and fragility.
