Announcements

National Science Foundation (NSF) Funding Opportunities

  •  Due: November 5, 2024 Research on Innovative Technologies for Enhanced Learning (RITEL) - A unique interdisciplinary funding opportunity supporting early stage exploratory and synergistic research in emerging technologies for teaching and learning across all learning contexts. Projects must advance research in both learning (and/or teaching) and technology.
  • Due: November 13, 2024  NSF – Planning Grants to Create Artificial Intelligence-Ready Test Beds. – New AI systems are often deployed before the interactions with and impacts on users can be fully evaluated or understood. When AI is evaluated, it is often with an inadequate number of samples that do not scale or generalize beyond a limited number of use cases. To address these limitations NSF encourages the community to pursue Planning Grants designed to develop AI-Ready Test Beds that can be used by researchers to test novel AI methods in potential real-world application scenarios. PIs must submit a Concept Outline to AI-Ready_testbeds@nsf.gov prior to submission of a planning proposal to aid in determining the appropriateness of the work for consideration under this opportunity.
  • Due: December 3, 2024 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education Individual Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (STEMEdIPRF) – The program is designed to support postdoctoral fellows engaged in experiences that will advance their career goals by developing their expertise, skills, and competencies to conduct fundamental STEM education research.
  • Due: December 15, 2024 NAIRR Pilot Expansion: Researcher Training, Community Outreach, and Classroom Education – NSF's EducateAI Initiative and NAIRR Pilot are seeking proposals to advance AI education and workforce development. The NAIRR Pilot aims to expand access to critical AI resources, while EducateAI focuses on delivering inclusive AI education. Proposals are invited in two areas: (1) expanding the NAIRR Pilot community through outreach and training for new researchers, and (2) enhancing AI education through conferences and Research Coordination Networks.

Animal Research is Not Always King: Researchers Should Explore the Alternatives

Nature outlines that more than a year ago U.S. President Joe Biden signed a law allowing researchers to test drug candidates on human tissue or computer models before moving to trials in people. This challenged a regulatory dogma, accepted since the 1930s, that vaccines and drugs need to be tested on one rodent species and one non-rodent, such as a primate… Animal studies are still important and often necessary, especially in the latter stages of vaccine and drug development. Moreover, researchers and funders need to be cautious and establish a way to carefully validate disease models based on human tissue. The changed mandate for the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a reminder for researchers to reduce their reliance on animals, particularly in early-stage research.

How I Learned to Embrace Open Science

Science: "The journey from guarded research practices to a more open and collaborative approach was challenging, yet deeply rewarding. I now see open science not as a hurdle, but as an opportunity to fortify my work against the inevitable tests of time and scrutiny".
