NEWS: Can sugar control weeds in the garden?

Welcome

Welcome to Issue 66 of Sweet Bites. Our feature this month is on chrononutrition: what is it, and can we utilise it help improve metabolic health?

Our News items are how COVID-19 has exposed vulnerabilities in our food supply, and how sugar can help keep weeds down in native gardens.

From the journals we’ve gathered three papers on sugars, carbohydrates and health: sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and bone health - a systematic review and meta-analysis; association of carbohydrate quality and all-cause mortality in the SUN project - a prospective cohort study; and the low-carbohydrate diet - short-term metabolic efficacy versus longer-term limitations.

We hope you enjoy this issue and invite you to be in touch if you have any feedback or suggestions for topics for future articles.

Research Updates

We have three papers to share on sugars, carbohydrates and health:

Sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and bone health: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Sugar sweetened beverage consumption was inversely related to bone mineral density in adults, and this was supported by a qualitative review. Read more here.

Association of carbohydrate quality and all-cause mortality in the SUN Project: A prospective cohort study.
Carbohydrate Quality Index (CQI) made up of fibre, glycemic index (GI), whole grain and solid vs liquid carbohydrate, was associated collectively with lower mortality, but none of the individual components were associated with mortality. Read more here.

The Low-Carbohydrate Diet: Short-Term Metabolic Efficacy Versus Longer-Term Limitations.
The low-carbohydrate diet has short-lived metabolic benefits with limited efficacy and practicality over the long term. Dietary modification needs tailoring to the individual to ensure long term adherence. Read more here.
