What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - August

Celebrate Brian Turner
on National Poetry Day Join us on National Poetry Day, Friday August 22nd at 6.30pm, for a special evening at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery honouring the life and legacy of Brian Turner (1944–2025) - a poet whose work gave enduring voice to the landscapes and spirit of the South. Organised by The Poetry Party, the event will open with a poem written for the occasion by Michael Harlow, followed by reflections and a reading from Jillian Sullivan. Family and friends will then share selected poems from Turner’s body of work that hold personal meaning. The evening will conclude with closing remarks and a final poem from Jillian Sullivan. All are warmly welcome to this tribute to one of New Zealand’s most beloved and influential literary figures. Artist Feature: Open Studio Day with Esperance Steven Ceramic artist Esperance Steven invites you into her studio for a day celebrating the clay, colour, and creativity of Central Otago. Working with clay from the land around Omakau, Kyeburn, and Hyde, Esperance creates high-fired stoneware built to withstand the region’s dramatic climate—tough, tactile, and timeless. On display and available to purchase will be a wide range of her work, including Posts of the Land, birdbaths, garden sculptures, the
much-loved “Lavender Ladies,” plus vases, mugs, butter bells, and yarn bowls. Each piece reflects the character of the local clay, its raw texture, earthy beauty, and unpredictability. Esperance is hands-on in every step of the process, from gathering the clay to firing in her on-site fuel kilns. Weather permitting, she’ll demonstrate her alternative firing methods, obvara pit or Baltic raku, where flame and smoke leave dramatic marks on the clay’s surface. Whether you're a collector or just curious, it’s a great chance to see a local artist at work, and perhaps take home a unique Central Otago-made piece. Enjoy everything on in the arts in August!
