Faculty inventions, startups shine at inaugural Innovation at Brown Showcase
The Innovation at Brown Showcase, held at Venture Café Providence, featured 25 early-stage startups led by Brown faculty, students and alumni, including Providence-based SmolTap, a medical device company working to improve success rates for infant spinal tap procedures. Research Strategy and Development

Submit Brown Research Achievement Award nominations—due 1/16/24
Brown recognizes outstanding research and scholarship through annual Research Achievement Awards. Early Career Awards and Mid-Career Research Achievement Awards will be given in 2024. Nominations (via UFunds) are due by 5PM on 1/16/24.

Apply for OVPR Salomon Research Awards ($15k)—due 11/14/23
Richard B. Salomon Faculty Research Awards fund exceptional faculty research projects with awards up to $15,000. Preference will be given to junior faculty building their research portfolio. Applications (via UFunds) are due by 5PM on 11/14/23.

Sponsored Projects

NSF project reporting enforcement pilot underway at three divisions: CCF, CMMI, and IIS
OSP is working with PIs whose annual reports were selected for review. Guidance includes submitting timely reports approved by PO. Overdue reports can result in NSF withholding award cash payments on the grant or cooperative agreement.

Federal Continuing Resolution - National Institutes of Health
Operating under a Continuing Resolution, NIH may issue non-competing research grant awards at a level below that indicated on the most recent Notice of Award. NIH expects institutions to monitor their expenditures carefully during this period.

*New report* Cost Center Manager All Positions Salary
Cost center managers can now see total Institutional Base Salary (IBS) of their employees when additional positions reside outside of their home department. Contact alexandra_gilbert@brown.edu with questions regarding this report.

Update: New NIH requirements for foreign subrecipients research documents
NIH has released a final update regarding data access requirements for foreign subrecipients. New effective date is January 1, 2024. Updates to all existing foreign subawards under NIH funding required by Feb. 29, 2024.

Slater Technology Fund invests in Brown startup XM Therapeutics
Jeff Morgan’s XM Therapeutics has received a new round of funding led by Slater Technology Fund. XM Therapeutics will use this new round of funding to focus on pre-clinical studies and cell-based assays for specific diseases.

Anita Shukla named Top 10 Emerging Leaders
The National Academy of Medicine named Anita Shukla (SoE) as 2023 Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine Scholars. Shukla's research focuses on designing responsive and targeted biomaterials for drug delivery and regenerative medicine.

BTI held its inaugural event on October 5! This year’s award recipients: Startup of the Year award to Walah Scientific Founder, Will Fairbrother; Inventor of the Year to Wafik El-Deiry; and Innovation of the Year to Kareen Coulombe.
