News from the College of Business, Government & LawWe acknowledge the traditional owners, both past and present, of the various locations Flinders University operates on, and recognise their continued relationship and responsibility to these lands and waters. We recognise that Flinders was established on the lands of the Kaurna nation, with the main Flinders campus located near Warriparinga Welcome to the October edition of the College newsletter. Our feature photo this month is our annual snapshot of the College. Our growth can be quickly captured by our annual snapshots. It is becoming increasingly difficult to photograph all of us in the one frame! Our feature story comes from Tania Leiman, our Dean of Law. Tania is now one of the longest-standing Law Deans in Australia. Long before I arrived at Flinders, she led a journey where Law embraced innovation and industry collaboration to create a unique profile for our law school. In doing so, she has provided leadership for the College in identifying and amplifying our points of difference to create unique offerings across our suite of disciplines. Other stories this month include a New Columbo Plan Study Tour in Vietnam led by Leoni Connah, 11 new A/A* journal publications, two new research funding awards, 2 PhD completions, and a wrap up on the 2024 Thrive Festival (check out those back bends). Happy reading! Kind regards, Professor Michael Gilding Feature StoryTales from inside: Law Flinders Law is embracing innovation and industry collaboration to shape the future of legal education. When: Time: Where: October is National Safe Work Month and for 2024 the theme across Australia is safety is everyone’s business. It aims to highlight the collective role everyone needs to play to provide safe workplaces and practices. It encourages business to focus on the positive outcomes for all including for staff, students, visitors, and the wider community. Safe work month reminds us of the core functions of safety, which is identifying hazards, managing and controlling the risks, consulting with staff on safety issues, and providing training to keep people safe. This is something everyone in the University needs to play an active role in. The Regulator, SafeWork SA, are running a number of free seminar sessions and activities, including mock trails and webinars on a range of topics from psychosocial, preventing muscular skeletal disorders and the role of manual handling training. Please see the schedule of activities for this October. Staff are also reminded they can access a range of University training material provided by the WHS Unit. These are available through the Flinders University WHS web site. It includes online modules and a large range of videos on the Safety Hub. There is material covering everything from office safety, manual handling, noise, driving safety and much more. The WHS Unit would also like to take this opportunity to thank all our Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) for their active participation in safety throughout the year. A morning tea will be held with our HSRs to celebrate SafeWork month later in October. Once again thank you for helping the University make safety everyone’s business.
