Banks Peninsula roading updatesCouncil contractors are continuing work to repair a number of roads in Banks Peninsula that were damaged after significant rainfall on 15 and 16 December 2021. They have been working hard completing dropout repairs, removing slips and installing road metal. Repair works on Dalglishs Road, Goughs Bay, Hickory Bay, Le Bons Bay, and Long Bay have been the focus for contractors this week. This newsletter contains updates about the status of these roads. Big Hill Road, Flea Bay, Stony Bay, Le Bons Vallley Road and Lavericks Ridge Road all have further work planned for the coming weeks. This includes work to repair road scouring and dropouts and install additional road metal. Work programmes remain on track at the moment despite Covid-19 challenges. Dalglishs Road Original damage Various small slips, three road dropouts and flooding at the bottom of the road. What work was undertaken this week? Work started this week on the areas of the road that are vulnerable to flooding. The aim here is to improve the resilience of this infrastructure to prevent ongoing flooding issues at the site. Contractors also began repairing a number of road dropouts. What still needs to be completed? The above work will be the focus for the coming weeks. Timeframe for this work to be completed One-two months. What is the current state of the road? Fully open. Road users should take care when passing the dropouts on this road.
What work was undertaken this week? This week crews finished the four wheel drive track between Paua Bay and Goughs Bay. This track provides residents with safe access in and out of the bay. Contractors finished cutting the pilot track as part of the preliminary works to address the main drop out. What still needs to be completed? A design for the repair of the main road dropout to so that underground water doesn't compromise the security of the repair work. Crews will be working on the bottom section of the road below the main slip next week. Rock scaling is likely to be completed next week. When the road between Paua Bay and Goughs Bay has been established, our contractors will be able to begin work on the bottom section of the road. The design for the road realignment has been finalised and is likely to start this month. Timeframe for completion Four wheel drive access tracks to be completed within the next two weeks. Culverts expected to be completed within the next three months. Once the road realignment works begin it is expected that it will take between 6-8 weeks. What is the current state of the road? Gated, with resident and farm access only. Goughs Bay Original damage Various full length slips, dropouts on the bottom half of the road, with full road dropout approximately halfway down. Hickory BayOriginal damage Various slips along the full length and one main road drop out halfway. What work was undertaken this week? The bulk of the slip material has now been taken to the bottom of the Bay. The first large dropout repair began this week. What still needs to be completed? Work repairing the road dropouts will continue next week. Timeframe for completion Drop out repairs are now expected to take between 6 and 8 weeks due to unanticipated poor road conditions. What is the current state of the road? The road will be opened to the public on Friday 4 March. Please expect long delays, Le Bons Bay Original damage Various flooding debris, one large debris flow and one blocked culvert that caused damage to the road seal. What work was undertaken this week? The sink hole at the end of the road has been filled. What still needs to be completed? Work will start shortly on the area next to the main bridge. Small repairs that have not been urgent will be made over the coming weeks and will continue until mid to late March Clear last slip. Timeframe for completion Work is expected to be completed next a month. What is the current state of the road? Fully open. Delays will occur in some work areas. Long Bay Original damage Various small and large slips the full length from Fisherman's Bay Road, with a large dropout above Paua Bay Road and various slips. What work was undertaken this week? Slips have now been cleared from the entire road. An engineer has been on site surveying the impact the river has on the road. The report from this visit will inform how to strengthen parts of the road that are already vulnerable to flooding. Specialised crews have finished clearing the rockfall risk above the road. What still needs to be completed? A plan for repairing the main slip on Long Bay Road has been finalised. Work will begin this month. Timeframe for completion Work to clear the main road drop out will begin in the coming weeks. This repair is likely to take two months to complete. What is the current state of the road?
