The 2024 MCW IHER Conference steering committee is pleased to share our summer 2024 Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Innovations in Healthcare Education Research (IHER) Conference newsletter with you. The steering committee has been busy during these last few months reviewing proposals, inviting presenters and building the 2024 IHER Conference schedule. The theme for this year’s Conference is “Human Connection and Technology: Better Together in Healthcare Education,” which reflects the importance of balancing the human and the digital aspects of healthcare education in a fast-changing world. Please take time to join us this year to learn and share many amazing innovations and fast-moving research as we conclude the first quarter of the 21st century. Illustrated in the figure below, you will find presenters and registrants hailing from 26 states who are interested in participating in the 2024 MCW IHER Conference, taking place September 17-19! You will also find colleagues from Australia, Canada, Israel, Netherlands, Norway, Puerto Rico, Sweden and the United Kingdom! Conference-goers can expect a diverse set of topics this year, but most assuredly, there will be workshops, panel sessions, oral presentations and speed posters focusing on artificial intelligence and large language models, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT. If you are a presenter or have registered for our Conference, you have already received a copy of the 2024 IHER schedule via email. Please register for the IHER Conference to receive a copy. The schedule will be available on the IHER Conference webpage, along a portable version of the schedule, closer to the official launch of the Conference. You also may request Outlook calendar invitations for each day by contacting us at IHERConference@mcw.edu. Upon reviewing the schedule, attendees will notice that this year’s Conference features many presenters from other institutions, and a significant number have been officially invited. Aside from the plenary sessions, look for many of these invited presenters in the ten-minute oral presentations and three-minute speed posters. Check out our Spotlight section below for details! This year’s IHER Conference continues with its hybrid platform, with online sessions occurring on Tuesday, Sept. 17 and Wednesday, Sept. 18, and in-person sessions occurring at MCW-Milwaukee on Thursday, Sept. 19. Please note that many sessions will also be livestreamed. Lunch will be provided for the Thursday plenary session with our invited speaker, Hedy S. Wald, PhD, Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Faculty, Harvard Medical School Pediatrics Leadership Program. Her presentation is entitled, “Professional Identity (Trans)formation; Reflection, Relationships, Resilience, Flourishing in Health Professions Education and Practice.” We value your input and ideas, so please email us at IHERConference@mcw.edu with any comments or questions. Warm regards, 2024 MCW IHER Conference Steering Committee Spotlight
We have many invited speakers for our ten-minute oral presentations and three-minute speed poster presentations, from inside and outside the USA, as reported in Table 1 below!
Artificial intelligence (AI) will emerge and be used during the IHER Conference in many ways. Using a large language model to group conference presentation titles resulted in 12 separate categories, reported in Table 2 below. Not surprisingly, the third most popular category was “Artificial Intelligence in Medical Education,” with a total of eight AI-related presentations. We look forward to further deploying AI during our 2024 IHER Conference, and the Zoom AI Companion will be used in our online and hybrid sessions to summarize meetings and chat threads. Later this year, the Ask AI Companion will be released, which will gather, synthesize and share information from multiple sources across Zoom. It will assist with the 2025 meeting preparation and with creating meeting agendas and executive briefs for projects. Some presentations will use AI-created graphics from prominent image generating programs such as DALL·E 3 and Stable Diffusion 3. Research on IHER Conference Many of our steering committee members have presented outcomes from the IHER Conference at regional, national and international conferences in the last few years! That’s right! Most recently, we presented at the 2024 AAMC Central Group on Educational Affairs (CGEA) Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and our presentation details are listed below: AAMC Central Group on Educational Affairs (CGEA) On April 4, 2024, “Evaluating a Hybrid Healthcare Education Research Conference” was presented by Madeline Ebert, BS; Rachel Kavanaugh, PharmD, BCACP; Johnathon Neist, MLIS; Rachele Harrison, PharmD, MEd; Simon Blaine-Sauer, BS; and Robert Treat, PhD at the 2024 AAMC CGEA spring meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Please help us continue our IHER research project by completing the two-minute IHER survey about the Conference!
