![]() Three High School Esports Teams Crowned State Champs & Tournament Winner Awarded On Saturday, December 11 the Michigan High School Esports League: Champions Series (MHSEL) held the fall 2021 State Championship final matches for three league games, as well as a keynote panel and clinical learning sessions at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) Student Center. “EMU’s partnership was vital as we planned and implemented the Championship and Clinics,” stated Maggie Helmer, MASSP Coordinator of Programs and Communications. The event welcomed over 135 attendees – including 80 students – from across the state. Guests included teams from the league, spectators, college/university scouts, and schools/students interested in learning more about esports. The eventful day included three intense championship games:
East Kentwood (League of Legends), Dakota (Rocket League), and Novi (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate) were crowned state champions. Dakota High School is now a three-time state champion in Rocket League and East Kentwood earned their second state championship title in League of Legends. “MASSP could not be more proud to provide students who love esports with the opportunity to compete at the varsity level on a statewide platform. It was very exciting to be able to host an in-person event for these athletes and to watch the championship games played live with shoutcasters and spectators,” said Wendy Zdeb, MASSP Executive Director. “Seeing students on the stage receiving medals and a trophy was very gratifying. It was clear they appreciated and enjoyed the recognition.” This season, MHSEL partnered with Detroit Pistons GT to offer teams the opportunity to participate in the Level Up Tournament. The tournament game was Rocket
League and the final two teams were Hudsonville and Divine Child. On Wednesday, December 8 they competed in the championship match (best of 3 format) and Divine Child High School was named the victor! For winning the tournament, Divine Child will receive a $2,500+ esports makeover for their school. MHSEL is hosted by the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) and the Michigan Association of Student Councils and Michigan Association of Honor Societies (MASC/MAHS) in partnership with PlayVS. The goal of MHSEL is to provide safe, competitive and curricular environments for Michigan High School students to compete against schools across the state. MHSEL provides students the opportunity to build critical skill sets, explore vast career opportunities, and contribute to their school’s culture as a varsity athlete. ![]() East Kentwood High School Esports Team | League of Legends Fall '21 State Champs ![]() Dakota High School Esports Team | Rocket League '21 State Champs ![]() Novi High School Esports Team | Super Smash Bros.
