Reassuring news from air testing at
wastewater treatment plant

Earlier this week we published a story on Newsline with the results from independent air quality testing. The findings showed that the  gases present are at levels below those considered toxic, but we know the ongoing stench is affecting people's wellbeing.

We've also just published the peer-reviewed report on last week's air quality results on our website, which you can access here.

We're leasing the equipment from the specialist air monitoring company so that we can continue to monitor the air quality regularly. We know the stench from the trickling filters increases significantly after rain, so we'll conduct follow-up sampling after the next weather event.

Last week's Council briefing now on YouTube

The Mayor and Councillors received a full briefing on the situation and the work being done to address the odour issues last week.

The week ahead...

Next week we expect to announce some initiatives to support residents who are experiencing distress from the ongoing stench.

Early next week we'll also announce the contractor to undertake the work of removing the material from the trickling filters. We know you were expecting this to be announced this week, but we're still finalising arrangements for this complex job with the contractor.

A flyer drop to 3,000 households immediately surrounding the wastewater treatment plant will be completed on Tuesday. We'll also have copies available at the Linwood Service Centre (at Eastgate Mall) and at Te Hononga Civic Offices (53 Hereford St) if you're outside of the delivery area. You can also request a digital copy by emailing us.

The flyer information will also be published in The Star, Pegasus Post and Southern View newspapers.
